Jun-28-11 | | nolanryan: i think they cll it sleeping beauty cause they kill the queens |

Jun-28-11 | | Once: Doh! I'm an eejit. If 50...Kxh5 I wanted to play 51. Bh7 intending g4#. This wins but black gets to prolong the agony with 51...Rxf4. Instead, Fritzie points out 51. Bf7+. And now on either 51...Rxf7 or 51...g6, 52. g4 is mate. Much much simpler. I'm just guessing, but the sleeping beauty of the title might refer to the Bg2. It spent the first 35 moves of the game doing nothing much, then woke up to deliver the coup de grace. |

Jun-28-11 | | rilkefan: <thegoldenband>, the ballet was my thought as well. Maybe they chose that one because it's long? |
|
Jun-28-11 | | pajaste: sleepin beauty might be a reference to the white queen which only moves three times and the in between move is back its original square. |
|
Jun-28-11 | | watwinc: After 50 ... Kf5 51 Bh7+ g6 52 Bxg6+ Rxg6 53 hxg6 e3 54 Rc2 Ke4 black seems to have some play ... |

Why isn't your line 50...Kf5 51.Bh7+ g6 52.hxg6 Rxc6 53.g7+ Rg6 54.g8=Q the easy win for White you are looking for? (Actually it's mate in 8 according to Fritz from the end position of this line.) Better is 50...Kf5 51. Bh7+ g6 52. hxg6 Rxc6 53. g7+ Kf6 54. g8/Q but White should win handily with Q+B vs R+B. |

Actually 50..Kf5 51.Bh7+ g6 52.hxg6 is better.

 | | Check It Out: Complicated game. Black's b-file pressure seemed to have white on his back foot for awhile, but it slipped away. Shredder says 44...Ra2 and 47...Rxf5 are blunders. |

Jun-28-11 | | ColeTrane: guys feel free to kibitz about possible queen traps on move 11 |
|
Jun-28-11 | | estrick: With 37 …Bd6, Black offered to trade rooks, which I assume leads to a drawn opposite color bishop ending. It’s interesting that after 47 …Rxf5, almost all of the pawns are on dark squares, creating a light square weakness around Black’s king, and no corresponding weakness around White’s king. Looking back, even as early as move 22, all of the key pawns on the g & h files were already on dark squares. So, when Kholmov allowed the trade of Black’s LSB for his knight on move 36, which created the possibility of an opposite color bishop ending, he must have been aware that he had the better attacking chances, provided he kept the rooks on the board. |
