Feb-13-13  solskytz: 33. e7 won right away - ...Kxe7 or ...Qxe7 are forced and either loses the queen right thereafter. The text is another great winning method.
Feb-13-13  morfishine: <FSR> 'Eliminating the Mittelman' is much better than 'Cutting out the Mittelman'...I wonder why they went with ''Cutting out the Mittelman'?
Feb-13-13  The HeavenSmile: <morfishine> I disagree, the word 'eliminating' is a bit too aggressive for a playful pun like this. Cutting out the middle man is the more common expression here in Blighty too.
Feb-13-13  vinidivici: From the ONLY 8 posts above this post, just one user cared to talk about about the game. The others talked about either the caption of the game or the spanish annotations that i dont understand.

Pardon me for indelicacy to suggest that this game also deserves GOTD.

Hecht vs Keene, 1966

Feb-13-13  Garech: Great pun, mediocre game.

Cheers,

-Garech

Feb-13-13  Abdel Irada: <Kind of had a feeling that it was you behind it all, <FSR>, already before opening this page...>

Call the present pun an example of "<FSR> colloquialized."

Feb-13-13  morfishine: <The HeavenSmile> I see your point; By the term 'eliminating' I meant from a sporting point of view, like in a single-elimination tournament of some sort.

The term 'Cutting out' (the "Mittleman" [ie: middleman) isn't related to chess, though its related to regular business, so its a poor pun, in my view

Of course, it goes without saying that 'aggressive' as it relates to chess, go hand-in-hand, unless one is inclined to be a passive player...

Feb-13-13  The HeavenSmile: <morfishine>
<isn't related to chess> This is probably true for >90% of the puns, they can't all be gems!

FSR: Thanks for the compliments, all. I'm hoping that CG.com uses "The Old Man and the C" soon for Caruana vs Korchnoi, 2011. That game is long overdue for GOTD, especially since Korchnoi has had a stroke and may not be playing any more chess.
Feb-13-13  Castleinthesky: Para todos aquellos quejándose de las anotaciones, pruebe Google Translate.
Feb-13-13  kevin86: A sharp win! Black probably will lose the queen.

Funny, people are writing differently these days.

Feb-13-13  waustad: So is the the Alejuela where one finds Juan Santamaria airport? If so, I wonder if I was there at the time and didn't even know that a tournament was on. I only remember one major tournament in CR and that was held at the Gran Hotel Costa Rica.
Feb-13-13  ajax333221: <Castleinthesky> de lo único que me quejo es de la falta de acentuaciones :)

Completely agree - it makes sense, from a chess perspective, to say that Monterrosa "eliminated the middleman (mittelman)" by defeating him. One wouldn't say that Monterrosa "cut out the middleman (mittelman)." Oh well.

Feb-13-13  rilkefan: <<vinidivici>: I dont understand the annotations!>

Don't think you missed much - move 17 says, <After a rather conservative opening white looks for weak points in the black position>; move 20 says, <Black has to blockade on e6 and try to break up the white wedge with g5>; move 27 says, <Black sees there are no chances on the kingside and tries to find play on the queenside, but the white position is solid. If white manages to move his knight to d3 and put a rook on g1 he has a lot of chances> (I think - I'm not fluent). Etc. Dunno why this is a GOTD.

Feb-13-13  RandomVisitor: Possibilities:

30.Bxh5! gxh5 31.Qxh5+

28...Nb3 29.Qxb3? Nxd4! 30.Bxd5+ Qf7! [Bd5 is pinned and cannot take on f7]

15...dxe4 16.dxe4 Qc7

Feb-13-13  lemaire90: Français or English por favor.
Feb-14-13  solskytz: I think it was 'bishop on d3' rather than knight in the annotations <Rilkefan>
Feb-14-13  rilkefan: Of course, knight is caballo.

perfidious: <rilkefan> Maybe so (wink, nod), but that knight at f5 in the final position was a nasty cavalier.
Feb-14-13  Balmo: Annotations are as follows (although I'm sure Google Translate does the job as well....)

17. Ng5 "After a fairly conservative opening, White tries to tickle the weaknesses in the black position"

Feb-14-13  Balmo: 20. e5 "Now black should blockade on e6 and then try and break down the white structure with ...g5

27. h5 "Black feels that there are no options on the kingside and so closes it, trying to create counterplay on the queenside, although the white position is solid. If white manages to get his bishop to d3 and rook on g1, he will have very good chances"

Feb-14-13  Balmo: 29. Ke8 "Black could take on g5"

33. Qd3. "e7 was worth consideration. All the same, white's attack seems winning"

35. Nf5 "Black resigns"

Feb-15-13  rilkefan: The last comment is <Rindieron las negras.> Shouldn't it be <Las negras se rindieron>? My one-month autodidact Spanish is trotting off to the rendering plant.
Feb-15-13  solskytz: <Perfidious> he would be chosen as one of the knights of the apocalypse..
