Jul-27-06 | | ChessDude33: wow...what i wouldn't give to have whites position aftr 8. Bc4, this gambit is awesome, taking full advantage of the early queen development in the scandinavian (and yes i realize AG Berg isn't exactly the best player). |

 | | MissScarlett: <From a simul at the Mercantile in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 23 (circa), 1905.> Per Lasker vs S T Sharp, 1905, this game should be dated April 29th. The <Philadelphia Inquirer>, April 30th, 1905, p.16, cited there, gives a list of all of Lasker's opponents, including <A Goldberg> (very likely this one: A Goldberg). Whyld's source, the <Literary Digest> of June 10th 1905, evidently corrupted this to <A G Berg>. It also has <15. Bxd6 and White won>, so apparently Black didn't throw in the towel. |

Aug-02-24 | | Atking: At first sight I thought 15...Nd7 16.Qe6 0-0-0 playable not realizing that Black has lost the right to castle... |
|
Aug-02-24 | | Amarande: Black is up on material (R+B+N vs Q+P) and there is no forced mate. White's only immediate threat, in fact, is 16 Ne6 hitting the B to gain tempo for 17 Nc7+, which is easily parried by 16 ... Bf6. It is certainly too soon to resign.
It's a true pity we don't have the rest of the score, because barring a Black blunder shortly after (perhaps he played 15 ... Nf6?? 16 Qxe7#) the position is very complicated, and if White does not realize some additional concrete gain before Black consolidates, there is a very good chance that he would even lose; I can only assume that Lasker, endgame wizard that he was, won it via his Pawns in that stage (a few quick clicks into the deeper stages of the endgame on Chesscom suggest White perhaps eventually gains another Pawn or two and then uses them to win enough Black pieces to come down to a Q vs. R endgame). |

Aug-02-24 | | Autoreparaturwerkbau: Eventhough spectacular,
<12.Rxb7?> is a bad move since it throws the clearly won position away and reenters a pretty complicated position as <Amarande> notes.Instead 12.Nfg5+

should be played immediately and with black's queen gone in next few moves due to pins and mate threats white is then free to gobble black's poorly developed pieces and winning convincingly. |

 | | Teyss: Missy and Amarande are right, the score seems incomplete which is unfortunate because up to there the game is exciting. I looked on other sites but they give the same, sometimes with "AG. Berg" as noted. According to 365chess, Lasker scored +5 -3 =1 which doesn't look impressive but there were apparently strong players of whom Oscar Chajes : https://www.365chess.com/tournament... So we're waiting for a real connoisseur to unearth an article from the local paper with the score, as sometimes happens (these posts always amaze me). |

 | | Teyss: Hi PawnSac,
Yes it does, I missed that. The games from 365chess are hence not complete (it did seem few, but sometimes happens if the opponents are of higher level than NN). So we're still waiting for a scholar to provide the complete score of the game and Lasker's performance. |

 | | PawnSac: that would be great if available. I'll have to look through my library and see if there is anything
related in old game collections. |

 | | jnpope: <So we're still waiting for a scholar to provide the complete score of the game and Lasker's performance.> Lasker went +15=3-1. The game was initially published in the Philadelphia <North American> from which all other chess columns acquired the game. No additional moves are available. |
