Jun-22-09  Sem: Let me see.
20. bxc3 - Ba4 checkmate.
20. Qf3 - Nxd1 and wins the exchange. If all rooks are swapped, then ... Bxf2, and Black is a full piece ahead. Correct?

fm avari viraf: [ Sem ] Your latter analysis looks incorrect. After, 20.Qf3 Rxd1+ 21.Rxd1 Rxd1+ 22.Qxd1 Nxd1 wins the Queen & the game.

  FSR: Mak the Knife.

fredthebear: Ah, but what version of Mak the Knife?

Would you chose Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Ray Conniff, Frank Sinatra, Deano, The Doors, Louis Armstrong, Jack Lukeman, Robert Goulet, Matt Monro, etc.?

It's a coin flip for me between Bing Crosby... https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...

...and Bobby Darin's version: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...

fredthebear: Perhaps Mak the Knighf here?
Mar-17-21  TheBish: How did it get changed from Mak to Mac?
Mar-17-21  Brenin: <fredthebear>: Lotte Lenya or Ute Lemper for me.
Mar-17-21  Brenin: Makogonov was quite a player: in the 1940 USSR Championship he defeated Smyslov, Keres and Botvinnik, yet he finished out of the prizes.
Mar-17-21  goodevans: An even and fairly uneventful game decided by a single blunder on the 19th move (a pretty obvious one at that) makes for a disappointing GOTD. We usually get better fare from <FSR>.

I wonder if those whose focus is the pun rather than the game will appreciate today's offering more.

Mar-17-21  Nosnibor: The original Mack the Knife was recorded well before the sources mentioned above. The tune features in "The Three Penny Opera " which was a parody on the former "Beggars Opera".
Mar-17-21  Nosnibor: <Fredthebear> Robbie Williams has also made a version of Mack the Knife.
Mar-17-21  dhotts: Wow, what a surprise! White attacks the rook and suddenly white resigns....Easy to see and easy to miss.

In Makogonov's case maybe Oksana Mysina?

Mar-17-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: I prefer the song in its original German, which is much edgier -- as it were.

A more literal translation of the first verse would be:

Oh the shark has teeth
And he wears them in his face
And MacHeath has a knife
Although one sees it not.

After that the song is basically a list of murders.

Mar-17-21  Vibishana: Somehow in playing through possible sidelines to this game I reached the following position:

Black to play and win.

Hint: in my favorite continuation the White king is mated on h6.
