Mar-17-18 | | stacase: I went off the rails with 36. NxR instead of 36. Nexf4 |
|
Mar-17-18 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: I thought the answer was
33 Nxf4 exf4
34 e5,
but the engine thinks that's thoroughly unsound. |
|
Mar-17-18 | | Walter Glattke: I also think, 33.Nxf4 exf4 34.e5 would win less spectacular. |
|
Mar-17-18 | | Walter Glattke: 33.Bb7 Bxb7 34.d7 also wins. |
|
Mar-17-18 | | alphee: I love this combination ... great |
|
Mar-17-18 | | malt: Looked at 33.N:f4 ef4 34.e5 Kg7 35 Be4 first attempt Then deflecting the Queen with
33.Bf7 Q:f7 34.N:e5 Qe8 35.N:g6 Rg8 36.Ne:f4 Bf6 37.Ne7 B:e7 38.R:g8 Q:g8 39.de7 had looked at 35.R:g6+ Kh7 also could not make it to work |
|
Mar-17-18 | | patzer2: A Bishop sham sacrifice (i.e. 33. Bf7!!) leading to the win of three pawns and a decisive attack against the Black King wasn't on my radar in attempting to solve today's Saturday puzzle. The pawn fork sham sacrifice (i.e. 37. d7!) follow-up deflects the Knight away from the action, and prepare the winning clearance move 38. e5! After 38. e5!, Black is hopelessly lost in a mating net. For example if 38...Rg8, then 39. Qf5 Be2 40. Rd6 +- is crushing. The reply 38...Qxe5, allowing 39. Nxe5 +-, was apparently Black's way of admitting the obvious and resigning. |

Mar-17-18 | | ChessHigherCat: I came up with the first move according to puzzle logic that Nxf4 is the most forcing, although my line probably doesn't foresee black's best defenses: 33. Nxf4 exf4 34. Rxg6+ Kxg6 35. e5+ Kh6 36. Qf5 Qg6 37. Qxf4+ Kh5 38. Bf7 |
|
Mar-17-18 | | ChessHigherCat: I guess I can take the cold comfort that I was not the only one to fall into that "thoroughly unsound" variation. Our charred bodies litter the wayside of the path to glory. |

Our charred bodies litter the wayside of the path to glory.> Come off it man, what a cornball post! Are you even sure that your variant doesn't work? Well, I was too busy to find the refutation earlier but I think this is it: 33. Nxf4 exf4 34. Rxg6+ Kxg6 35. e5+ Kh6 36. Qf5 Rf8 37. Qg4 Qh5 |

 | | Breunor: I also went for 33 Nxf4 exf4 34 Rxg6ch Kxg6 35 e5 ch Kh6 36 Qf5; According to Stockfish, this loses:
1) -6.55 (21 ply) 36...Nxd5 37.d7 Qh5 38.dxc8=Q Bxc8 39.Qxc8 Qxf3 40.Qc6+ Bf6 41.Qxd5 Qxf2+ 42.Qg2 Qxh4+ 43.Qh3 Qxh3+ 44.Kxh3 Bxe5 45.Kg4 Bxb2 46.Rd6+ Kg7 47.axb4 cxb4 48.Rb6 Rf8 49.Rb5 f3 50.Rg5+ Kh7 51.Rb5 Bg7 52.Rb7 Never considered Bf7!! Stockfish has 33 Bf7 as the only winning move: 1) +5.75 (21 ply) 33...Qxf7 34.Nxe5 Qe8 35.Nxg6 Rg8 36.Nexf4 Qf7 37.e5 b3 38.Qd2 Nc4 39.Qc1 Qf5 40.Ne6+ Bg5 41.Rxg5 Qxf2+ 42.Rg2+ Qe3 43.Ne7 Rxg2+ 44.Kxg2 Qxc1 45.Rxc1 Ra8 46.d7 Ne3+ 47.Kg3 Second best is 33 axb4, 0.23

Mar-18-18 | | scholes: I had 33 Nxf4 exf4 34 e5 Nxd5 35 Rxd5 Qe6 36 Qe4 Rg8 According to stockfish this wins but black has very strong 36 .. Kg7. With one move black defends it king and launches very strong attack on white. |
