Sep-11-09 | | brucejavier: wow what a game! move 26. Rd7!! what a move, cant believe still no comment on this game |

Sep-11-09 | | andreagiananti: why can't black play 26...Bxd7? |
Sep-11-09 | | mrsaturdaypants: 26...Bxd7 27 Ba3+ Ne7 28 Rxe7, and black has a few options, none of them good. His king needs luft at f7 or g8, or else it's mate when white's rook retreats down the d-file. If 28...f6 29 Rxg7+ Ke8 30 Rxg8+ Kf7 31 Rxa8. If 28...Rh8 29 Rxd7 Kg8 30 g6. Black can't take on g6, as Rxg7 is mate. 30...Re8 can prevent mate from Rxf7 and Ne7, but at too great a cost. Great move by Shirov. |
Sep-11-09 | | Jason Frost: fantastic game |
Nov-01-20 | | Steve.Patzer: 26. Nd4 was better. |
Nov-01-20 | | MisterFreeeze53: I would have whacked the B with the other Rook. |
Nov-01-20 | | Thumbtack2007: Black can play 26...Bxd7, although perhaps not the best, and eventually get a draw. These insane puzzles frequently show imperfect lines. As far as White's first move. SF12 prefers 26.Nd4, leading to a long end game battle, but eventually a win for White. |
Nov-01-20 | | Walter Glattke: Surprise, surprise, beating Karjakin!? Very hard to do, 26.Rxe6 is not enough. 26.Rd7!? Bxd7!? why not, they ask. 27.Ba3+ Ne7 (or -c5 to add) 28.Nxe7 g6? 29.Nf5# 28.-Be6 29.Nxg8 Kxg8 draw. 29.Rf1 Rh8 30.g6 Ke8 good question, why not. Playing 26.Nd4 about 1 pawn worth (+1) for white, my consideration. |

Nov-01-20 | | mel gibson: I didn't see any worthwhile move.

Nov-01-20 | | Brenin: Black could have accepted the R, with 26 ... Bxd7, e.g. 27 Ba3+ c5! 28 Bxc5+ Ne7 29 Rxe7 b6 (the point of 27 ... c5, since the B is now en prise) 30 Rxd7+ bxc5 31 Rxc7 g6 32 Nd6 Rg7, and Black has the exchange for a few Ps. Alternatively, 29 Nxe7 Be6 30 Nd5+ Ke8 31 Nxc7+ Kd7 32 Nxa8 Rxa8, a P down with good drawing chances. |
Nov-01-20 | | Messiah: Very nice! Well done! |
Nov-01-20 | | Brenin: Has anyone noticed a common theme uniting today's POTD and GOTD? Coincidence? |
Nov-01-20 | | cormier: great game ... |
Nov-01-20 | | cormier: maybe 14...000 was better or best |
Nov-01-20 | | catlover: I wish I could say that I saw 26. Rd7. I tried unsuccessfully to make 26. Rxe6 work. Kudos to <Brenin> and <mel_gibson> whose analysis shows that 26. Rd7 Bxd7 still leaves black drawing chances. It must be pretty hard to find the best response over the board to a move like 26. Rd7. |
Nov-01-20 | | agb2002: White is one pawn down.
Black threatens b6 and Bxf5.
The lack of mobility of the black king suggests 26.Rd7: A) 26... Bxd7 27.Ba3+ Ne7 28.Rxe7 Rh8 29.Rxd7+ Kg8 30.Rxc7 wins some material. B) 26... Bxf5 27.Ba3+ Ne7 28.Texe7 Rh8 (28... g6 29.Rxf7+ Ke8 30.Rfe7+ Kf8 31.Re6+ c5 32.Bxc5#) 29.Rxf7+ Ke8 (29... Kg8 30.Rxg7#) 30.Rfe7+ Kf8 31.Rxg7+ Ke8 32.Rfe7+ Kf8 33.Rh7+ Ke8 (33... Kg8 34.Rd(h)g7#) 34.Rde7+ Kd(f)8 35.Rxh8#. C) 26... Rc8 27.Rxe6 fxe6 28.Nxg7
C.1) 28... Nf4 29.Ba3+ c5 30.Bxc5#.
C.2) 28... Rxg7 29.Rxg7 with the better ending (29... Ne7 30.Rh7; 29... Nf4 30.g3 Nd5 -30... Nxh3+ 31.Kg2 or 30... Ne2+ 31.Kf2 and the knight is lost- 31.Rh7). C.3) 28... b6 29.Nxe6+ Ke8 30.Rh7 looks good for White because the h-pawn is about to fall. |
Nov-01-20 | | devere: 26.Nd4 is the best winning chance. Both Shirov and Karjakin must have missed 26...Bxd7 27.Ba3+ c5!! which gives Black decent drawing chances in either an opposite color Bishops or R+N vs 2 R ending. Chess is a difficult game! |

 | | scormus: <catlover> good call! I didn't pick 26 Rd7 either, I thought .... Bxd7 looked OK for B.
In fact Shirov rejected 24 Rd7 (same position) before deciding it was worth a try 2 moves later.. Curiously, my 10 year old engine wrongly(?) chose 26 Rd7 and gave a modest advantage to W after quite a deep search.
However, it "agreed" that 26 Nd4 was better after I forced it. Seems it's not only difficult for top GMs, it's difficult for the engines as well. At least it was for mine. I wonder that CG doesn't give their best shot at the solution the next day. |
Nov-01-20 | | TheaN: I did spot <27.Rd7?!> but wasn't entirely convinced, though not on account of <27....Bxd7 28.Ba3+ c5! => which is pretty insane in itself. White's best play is 27.Nd4 but this is hardly worthy a puzzle move. |

Nov-01-20 | | Ajedrezjc: <Ajedrezjc> I'd like to ask for a favor. I'm a 1200-1300 player and would like to get a program that would give me feedback on my moves and explain the computer's moves when I play against it. Any suggestions? |
Nov-01-20 | | catlover: <Ahedrezjc>, you might check on the website:
https://www.newinchess.com/
You will probably find a program for sale there that would do what you want. A few decades ago, I had a version of Fritz that had some sort of training mode. So there are bound to me newer programs that do the same. Hope you find what you're looking for. |
Nov-02-20 | | Ajedrezjc: Thanks, catlover. |
Nov-02-20 | | SChesshevsky: < Ajedrezjc> An interesting analytical program is called DecodeChess. It's even advertised on CG's and has appeared to get some decent reviews. Here's a look by WGM Elisabeth Paehtz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKP...
Still think the program shines mostly in the tactical area with maybe less help in basically dry positional play. Might still need a good middle game book and self analysis for that. Maybe somebody with more Decode experience can give a deeper take on the program. |

Nov-02-20 | | Ajedrezjc: Thanks a lot, <Schesshevsky> |
