Sep-01-17  Helios727: What happens after 23... Qxg5 ? The white Bishop could take the black Queen, but then the black pawn takes the white Queen.
Sep-01-17  rahulthemoron: If black plays 23.Qxg5 white saves his own queen with Qc4+ and then takes black's queen.
Sep-01-17  kekule: After 23... Qxg5 24 Qc4+, Kh8 or Kg7 or Rf7 or Qd5. 25 Bxg5 or Qxd5. Zwischenzug.
Sep-01-17  diagonalley: suddenly i get "chess viewer not defined" (or some such) - had to switch to the default viewer... anybody else experience similar(?)
Sep-01-17  Strelets: <diagonalley> I'm having that problem too.
Sep-01-17  Cybe: I think, 22... N:e5 is giving chances for Black to draw.
Sep-01-17  Altairvega: I thought of the Rook theme week and i found the 23 Rg5+ pushing the black King in to the corner. Then the white Queen goes off the threat and continues the attack ..
Sep-01-17  Cheapo by the Dozen: I went with a different plan, which I now think doesn't work.

23 Qb3+ Kh8 (I overlooked the ... Kg7 alternative) 24 Bg5 Qxh5
25 Bf6+ Nxf6
26 Rxh6 Nxh5

White has now "won" the queen for three pieces. The goal is now to win a piece back with a double threat, one leg of which is

Nxf2 Rx2
Qxd4+

But 27 Qb4 fails to ... Kg8, and would be totally pointless if Black had played 23 ... Kg7.

And while 27 Qd5 looks good in the 23 ... Kh8 case, it doesn't seem to work either if Black had played 23 ... Kg7.

Sep-01-17  7he5haman: What about 16...Bxf2+? I guess Black becomes too weak on the dark squares...
Sep-01-17  morfishine: I figured <23.Qc4+> initiated a fatall Queen invasion via <e6>

I didn't think White could play 23.Rg5+ due 23...Qxg5 24.Bxg5 <24...dxc3>

Very nice attack by White

Oh well, Fantasy Football is upon us!

Let the games begin!

Sep-01-17  patzer2: For today's Friday puzzle (23. ?,) I quickly found the in-between move (a.k.a. zwischenzug) tactic 23. Rg5+! +- (+16.04 @ 29 depth, Stockfish 8.)

However, after the expected 23. Rg5+! Kh8 I struggled to decide on a follow-up move as White has at least five winning 24th move alternatives:

( [Stockfish 8 64] 32:+15.55 <24.Qb4> Be3 25.Bxe3 dxe3 26.Qe7 Qxg5 27.Qxg5 e2 28.Kg1 Rg8 29.Qe7 Rg7 30.Qe8+ Rg8 31.Qxe2 Nf8 32.Qe5+ Rg7 33.Qe8 Rg8 34.Nf6 Rxg2+ 35.Kh1 Bd7 36.Qxa8 Bc6 37.Bf7 Rf2+ 38.Kg1 Rg2+ 39.Kf1 Kg7 40.Bd5 Rg5 41.Bxc6 Rf5+ 42.Ke2 Rxf6 43.Qxb7+ Kh6 44.Rg1 Re6+ 45.Be4 Ng6 46.Kd3 a6 47.Rg3 Rd6+ 48.Kc2 Re6 49.Rh3+ Kg5 50.Rxh7 Re5)

( [Stockfish 8 64] 32:+3.75 <24.Qc4> Be3 25.Nxe3 Qxg5 26.Qxd4+ Nf6 27.Rf1 Be6 28.Ng4 Qd5 29.Qc3 Qxd2 30.Qxd2 Nxh5 31.Qd4+ Ng7 32.Nf6 Rad8 33.Qh4 Bg8 34.Kg1 Rd6 35.Nxg8 Rxf1+ 36.Kxf1 Kxg8 37.Qc4+ Ne6 38.Qc8+ Nd8 39.Qb8 Rd1+ 40.Kf2 Rd2+ 41.Ke3 Rd7 42.Qxa7 Nc6 43.Qc5 Kf7 44.Kf4 Kg7 45.Qg5+ Kh8 46.Qf6+ Kg8 47.Qe6+ Rf7+ 48.Kg3 Kf8 49.Kg4 Rg7+ 50.Kf3 )

My pick for the follow-up to today's puzzle solution 23. Rg5! Kh8 was the weakest of these winning alternatives with 24. Qc3 +-.

Strongest of course is the game move 24. Qb4! exploiting the weak dark squares, paralyzing Black's undeveloped pieces, and giving White a tactical field day with open lines of attack against the exposed Black King position.

P.S.: For an early Black improvement, instead of 10...f6 11. exf6 ⩲ (+0.37 @ 29 depth, Stockfish 8,) I prefer the computer choice 10...Qb6 = (+0.00 @ 33 depth, Stockfish 8) as in Black's win in G Guseinov vs F Vallejo Pons, 2014.

Sep-01-17  patzer2: <morfishine> Though I question the wisdom of FSU's athletic director in scheduling so tough an opponent for a first game, I'm looking forward to seeing FSU vs. Alabama on TV tomorrow night at 7:00 PM CST (8:00 PM EST.)

P.S.: Didn't realize Alabama fans could be so "enthusiastic" in support of their team. The coaches and team members on both teams are being extremely polite to one another, but for some of the more vocal fans it's an entirely different situation.

Alabama fans certainly have no great affection for ACC teams, especially since Clemson defeated them for the National Championship earlier this year and FSU defeated Alabama the last time these teams played in 2007.

chessgames.com: If anybody is having the <chess viewer not defined> error please choose your chess viewer from the pulldown menu under the board diagram that looks like this:

<PGN Viewer: ________ [What is this?]>

We are experimenting with a new better viewer and in our haste accidentally eliminated two of the oldest and most venerated viewers. Our sincere apologies, but everything is returned to normal.

In a few weeks (maybe days) we'll be offering the new choice which is called the "Olga Chess Viewer" — we hope that people find it more powerful, faster, and easier to use than the old Chess Viewer Deluxe, and far more functional than the current default "pgn4web."

All previous options that we have had will remain (except for the typographical error that caused today's commotion), so if you don't like the new upcoming product we will not force you to change.

Sep-01-17  kevin86: Nice attack.but it is biased!
Sep-01-17  Strelets: Thanks, <chessgames.com>! I'll be giving Olga a try when she's up and running.
Sep-01-17  ninja warrior: I'd have preferred the artistic finish 28.Qf8+ Ng8 29.Bf6# =D
Sep-01-17  skemup: morfishine 23.Rg5+ 23..Qxg5 24.Q checks
Sep-01-17  ChessHigherCat: This reminds of a game Jakob Murey showed me where he sacrificed two rooks in a King's Gambit to get his knight to f6 for an unstoppable Arabian mate, except here it's even more complicated because to parry the Arabian mate white has to play BxN which leads to mate in 1.

Conclusion: too hard for a Friday!

Jimfromprovidence: FWIW, there is a pleasing alternative solution that forces black to lose his queen after the forced 25 Rxg8 Kxg8.

click for larger view

White follows with 26 Nh6+, then black must play 26...Kh8, as 26...Kg7 loses the queen to a knight fork.

However, white still wins the queen after 27 Bg5, below.

click for larger view

The wow factor comes in if black does not give up the queen by taking the black bishop, losing the queen to a knight fork, but instead tries to save the queen with 27...Qe4 (used here, or with 27...Qxh5).

White now mates using a queen sacrifice, 28 Qf8+ Nxf8 29 Bf6#.

Sep-01-17  BxChess: Regarding the viewer problem. I use Chess Viewer Deluxe and all week the right hand edge has been truncated so that the Black moves beyond 20 are not displayed. Somehow the viewer window has been hidden by the right hand border that is alligned with the header window beneath the board.
Sep-01-17  morfishine: <patzer2> Well, for years my Gators have opened with at least 1 "cupcake", usually 2. But this year we open vs Michigan and we have 10 players out on suspension. So I gotta wonder who made that scheduling decision

Alabama fans are as rabid as they get

<Jimfromprovidence> Very nice post, a startling line
