Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-30-10  Marmot PFL: Funny game, white plays very passively and with 37...Kd7! he would be almost completely zugzwanged. ex 38 Qc3 Qf1+ 39 39 Bc1 Qd1 40 Qd2 Qf3 41 Qe3 Qf5+ 42 Ka1 Qc2 and wins. Or 39 Qc1 Qd3+ 40 Ka1 Qa6+ and mates. Normally I would expect Nakamura to find this in blitz, but he must be tired after playing two events so close together.
Jan-30-10  Gambitor: 57...g1=B naka is in good mood in corus.
Jan-30-10  ChessYouGood: Is it just me, or is Nakamura's underpromotion annoying? I guess queening loses the exchange...
Feb-08-10  Eyal: <Marmot PFL: Funny game, white plays very passively and with 37...Kd7! he would be almost completely zugzwanged [...] Normally I would expect Nakamura to find this in blitz, but he must be tired after playing two events so close together.>

Actually he didn't miss anything - the score is wrong, it should be 36.Qc1 rather than Qd2 (a transmission error that was later corrected in the official pgn); so 37...Kd7 would have allowed 38.Qxc4 and 39.d5.

Feb-08-10  Marmot PFL: <Eyal> Thank you for the corrected score, even here though 37...g5 looks much better tha Nc7, as 38 Bxg5? loses to Nxg5 39 Qxg5 Qc2+ 40 Ka1 Qd1+ and mates, while the ending after 38 Qxc4 dc4 is likely winning for black as his king is free while white is tied by the threat of c3 promoting the b pawn. Black may not be winning but certainly white's game is very hard.
Feb-09-10  Atking: Yes I like your idea <MarmotPFL>, e.g 38.QxQc4 dxQc4 the question is : Can white King stop the 2 rabbits b&g? a) 39.d5 Nf4 Already dangerous for white 40.BxNf4? gxB 41.Kc1 c3! or 40.Kc1?! Ne2+ 41.Kd2 c3+! 42.bxc b2 43.Kc2 Nxc3 44.Kxb2 Nd1+ wins. Thus 40.e6 Kd8 (40...Kc7 41.Bb6+! Kd6 Bc5+) The question is how white could progress as black King is going to f6 or g6 keeping e6 under control. If then e7 Kf7 d6 Ke8 ~ Kd7 White bishop should keep pressure on g5 and Bd2 stops the march of the King c1-d2-c3 Always Kc1 is under the process Ne2-Nc3-Nd1+ winning (Ne3-Nf5-Nxd6-Nf7) b) 39.Kc1 g4 40.Kd2 Nc7! 41.Bg1 Far to the fork Nd1+ noted previously (e3-f2 under control) 41...Nd5 42.Bh2 (42.e6? g3!) 42...Kd7 and Ke6-(Nc7)-Kd5 Black looks very good here too.
