Jun-09-15 | | TheBish: Nguyen Hoang Tuan vs Van Huy Nguyen, 2005 Black to play (32...?) "Easy"
Black is already up an Exchange, so it would be very easy (and maybe best) to return the material surplus with ...Rxb1 if it meant owning the light squares, or otherwise gaining an important tempo or square for the attack. My first two candidate moves, Qf3 and Qb2, fail to 33. Qc8+ followed by mate. The lesson to be learned here? Look to see if your opponent has a threat, or if your king is in danger (like a weak back rank), or you may be wasting time by not properly evaluating the position. This brings us back to my initial speculation that returning the Exchange may be best. In order to win quickly (because of White's mating possibility), returning the extra material is necessary. 32...Rxb1! 33. Rxb1 Qf3 34. Kf1 (forced) Ra2! 35. Rb8+ Kh7 and White can't stop mate without parting with the lady (36. Qxd5 exd5 37. Kg1), a hopeless proposition. |

Jun-09-15 | | zb2cr: 32. ... Rxb1; 33. Rxb1, Qf3 and White has to flee in the face of the mate threat on g2. All I can see is 34. Kf1, Qh1+; 35. Ke2, Qxb1 and Black is now up by a full Rook as opposed to the exchange. |
Jun-09-15 | | TheaN: Tuesday 9 June 2015 <32....?> Slightly odd problem, in the sense that black is already up the exchange. It is crucial to spot white is actually threatening a mate in two with 33.Qc8+ Rxc8 34.Rxc8+ Qd8 35.Rxd8#. For that exact reason black can't play Qf3, though he would like to. So: <32....Rxb1! 33.Rxb1> any decline of returning the material plus simply puts white a rook behind. <33....Qf3 34.Kf1 Qh1+ 35.Ke2 Bf3+ 36.Kd2 (Kd3 Qxb1+) Ra2+ 37.Kc3 Qxb1 >. Black could have captured on b1 earlier, but I'm inclined to say white can not avoid mate anymore, ie 38.Qf8+ Kh7 and mate soon. |
Jun-09-15 | | dfcx: Black is up an exchange with a rook against a bishop, but white can play Qc8+ for mate. So black need to deal with this threat first. 32...Rxb1 33.Rxb1 Qf3 34.Kf1 Qh1+ 35.Ke2 Qxb1 |
Jun-09-15 | | CHESSTTCAMPS: Black has a rook for a bishop, with the possibility of 32... Qf3 threatening mate on g2. However, after 32... Qf3?? 33.Qc8+ wins for white. Instead, black can play 32... Rxb1 33.Rxb1 Qf3 34.Kf1 Qh1+ 35.Ke2 Qxb1, netting a rook advantage. |

Jun-09-15 | | patzer2: Solved both Tuesday puzzles today.
If the puzzle (32...?) is White to move, White gains the advantage with 32. Bd4! when play might continue 32...Qd8 33. Bxa1 Rxa1 34. Qe7 Ra8 35. Qxf7 Qf6 36. Qg6 Kg8 37. Qh7+ Kf8 38. Be4 Ra1 39. Rxa1 Qxa1+ 40. Kg2 Qd4 41. Qh8+ Ke7 42. Qh4+ Kd7 43. Bxd5 Qxd5+ 44. f3 Qd2+ 45. Kh3 Qe1 46. Qe4 Qa1 47. Kg4 Qb2 48. h4 (+1.16 @ 24 depth, Deep Fritz 14). In the actual Tuesday puzzle position (32...?), I found the 32...Rxb1! 33. Rxb1 Qf3 possibility while trying to solve the position as White to move (i.e. 32. ?). White's clearly decisive error appears to be <29. Be2?>, allowing the winning move <29...Ra4! > (-2.46 @ 21 depth, Deep fritz 14). Instead, White can make a fight of it with 29. f4! when play might continue 29...Qh4! 30. Qd4! (30. Qc5 Rd8 31. Bf2 Rg6! 32. Bf1 Qxf4 ) 30... Rd8 31. Bf2 Ba8 32. Qc4 e5 33. Qxf7 exf4 34. Re1 Bc6 35. Re5 Rg5 36. Rxg5 Qxg5 37. Bd4 Ba8 38. Bg6 Qh6 39. gxf4 Bd5 40. Qf5 Bc4 41. Bb6 Bd3 42. Qh5 Rd6 43. Qxh6+ gxh6 44. Bxd3 Rxd3 45. Kg2 Kg7 46. h3 Kf6 47. Bc5 (-1.30 @ 35 depth, Deep Fritz 14) with drawing chances for white in a difficult Bishop and two Pawns versus Rook and one Pawn endgame. Earlier in the game, White might have improved over <16. Nb5?>, allowing <16...Qb8! >, with 16. b5 Nb4! 17. Ne5! Nxe3 . White's last best chances for a level game appear to be with 15. Ne4 = or 13. Nb5 =. |

Jun-09-15 | | Herma48852: 32.. Rxb1 33. Rxb1 Qf3 with unstoppable mate threat. |
Jun-09-15 | | kevin86: Black can threaten mate by 32 ♕f3?? but white can mate in two- so black plugs in the intermezzo, 32....♖xb1 removing both the restraining bishop AND the mate threat. Black can proceed with 33...♕f3 with ! instead of ??. |
Jun-09-15 | | PJs Studio: White is not threatening mate on the move. But black cannot move his queen from the h4-d8 diagonal. 33.Qc8+ Qd8! (Not 33...Rxc8??) |
Jun-09-15 | | whiteshark: <PawnSac> IIRC Nguyen is the most common name in Vietnam... <"The first shall be last, and the last shall be first"> Right, the main point is consistency... |
Jun-09-15
 | | Bubo bubo: Black is up the exchange, but he has to keep an eye on his back rank. 32...Rxb1! removes any such mate threat. White may recapture (otherwise he is just down a whole rook), but with 33.Rxb1 the rook leaves the protection of his queen, and after 33...Qf3 it will fall victim to a skewer, since White can lift the threat of Qg2# only with 34.Kf1 Qh1+ (or, even worse, with 34.Qxd5 exd5). |
