Nov-05-10  Marmot PFL: <The rook ending with four pawns against three on one wing is normally a draw> Korchnoi. I see no reason for white not to play it out, so I wonder if he lost on time.
Nov-05-10  goodevans: The thing about the French is that black <always> gets a bad bishop.

Not in this line, he doesn't. Equality with ease.

Nov-05-10  Marmot PFL: <goodevans> Not sure what Shirov's plan was there, but that exchange looked like an amateur idea.

Peligroso Patzer: <Marmot PFL: Did Shirov really resign or lose on time? His position does not look like a forced loss.> [from page 7 of the tournament page: Tal Memorial (2010)

Here are two variations that illustrate the difficulty of White's position:

From the final position:

(I) 52. Kh3 g5 53. Kg3 gxh4+ 54. Kxh4 Rf4+ 55. Kg3 Kg5 56. Rf3 h4+ 57. Kh3 Rxf3+ 58. gxf3 Kf4 59. Kxh4 Kxf3 60. Kg5 61. Kf6 Kd5 62. Kxf7 Kxe5 ; and

(II) 52. Kh3 g5 53. hxg5+ Kxg5 54. Kg3 h4+ 55. Kh3?? (but if 55. Kh2, then 55. ... Kf4 will be winning for Black) Rh1#

plang: I think the "rule" of 4 pawns versus 3 on one side refers to when the pawns are connected. In this case the e-pawn was a real liability.
Nov-05-10  rapidcitychess: Shirov is suffering the first round too... Just like Kramnik. Maybe Bilbao was extremely tiring.
Nov-05-10  Marmot PFL: Played this out twice vs stockfish, and drew both times (easily) with 52 Kh3 g5 53 hg5+ Kxg5 54 g3 Kf5 55 Re2 (1st game) and 55 Kg2 (2nd game). In neither case could the machine find a constructive plan. No doubt Wang Hao would improve on its play, but this still looks like premature resignation.
Nov-05-10  Eyal: The best winning plan for Black might be the one mentioned by <Peligroso Patzer> on the main tournament page: place the rook on f5 and run the king around to the center, in order to win the e5-pawn, while the white king remains cut off from the action.
Nov-05-10  polarmis: If you go to about 20:38:05 in the video - http://video.russiachess.org/browse... - you can see Wang Hao demonstrating exactly that idea!
Nov-05-10  Marmot PFL: I saw that plan too but the computer never tried it. Some positions I let it think for several minutes too. Guess some plans are still too long range for them. I think the competition versions must have special endgame software.
Nov-06-10  shakespeare: I think the problem is, taht white has moreless no good moves an black can improve systematically 52.Kh3g5 53. hxg5 Kxg5 a.s.o.
Nov-23-10  ReikiMaster: <Eyal> is right (as usual): Rf5 & Kg6-e8-c6 wins. Black must have seen this to play 42...Rxf2!
