Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-14-10  whiteshark: Finally Nigel conjures a King's Gambit out of his opening hat.
Dec-14-10  beenthere240: This was very exciting for a while, especially, when Howell used up nearly all of his time in the first 15 moves. Around move 30 black forced off all the major pieces except for a couple of bishops. Howell's 5...Nf6 looked shaky to me, but it didn't hurt.
Dec-14-10  Eyal: Short in the live post-mortem: <The main advantage of the King's Gambit is that there are so many refutations, Black can't play them all at once. He has to decide which one to go for, and then loses on time.>
Dec-14-10  Marmot PFL: Was 8...Nxd5 really a novelty? Evidently everybody played Nh5 for over 150 years.
Dec-14-10  ColdSong: Lively game, thank you Mr Short, even if I can't keep feeling that white does nothing more here (but is it possible?)than trying to prove that king's gambit still stays playable.Anyway, funny challenge:Marshall Steiner variation, King's gambit...I'm really curious:What kind of so called "dubious" variation to the next round?
Dec-14-10  shalgo: Short could have tried 10.Nxf7, which seems to leave him with pretty good compensation after 10...Kxf7 11.Bxf4 Ke8 (11...Kg6 12.Qd3+) 12.Qe1+ Ned7 13.c3.

But Howell had better responses with 10...Qxh4 or 10...Qe7.
