Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-14-11  luzhin: Fantastic mating net by Gashimov and an object lesson in the perils of delayed Q-side development.
Mar-14-11  watwinc: Gashimov could have played Rd7 dbl ch a move earlier, no?
Mar-14-11  Gilmoy: Topalov winces at an unpleasant memory. Note how White has <two> pawns trained on b3, so the desperado 34..R(b4,f3) fails.

<watwinc: a move earlier ...> No, Black's Rg2 controls f2, so 29.Rd7++ Kb6 and Black's K escapes to a7. But after <29.Bf4>, Black has no good way to prevent Be3+ (hence 30..Kb6?? is now a mating net).

On top of that, Black's Rg2 is hanging on the discovered check, e.g. 29..Re2? 30.Rd2+. So <29..Rxg4> was nearly an only-move just to hide his R where White can't steal it.

  Penguincw: A nice move threatens mate in two even if 34...♖f3 35.b3+ ♖xb3 36.♖xb3

Here's another game with a nice king move:Schlechter vs Meitner, 1899 (34.♔h2).

Mar-14-11  howlwolf: Glimoy, the mating ombination also doesn't work if black's rook is on the 2nd rank even if black's king goes to b5: 29 Rd7+ Kb6 30 Rd6+ Kb5 31 a4+ Ka4 32 Rb6 Bd7 33 Ka2 black can play Rc2 pinning the b pawn and preventing the mate. Beautiful combination and game--should win the first brilliancy prize for this round.
