perfidious: This seems an example of castling into it.

One rather doubts that Esserman was then rated 2425, as I played him one year later in my last but one event, when he was rated ~2100.

FSR: Esserman is a tactical maniac (in case you couldn't tell). Earlier this year he published a great book on the Smith-Morra Gambit, <Mayhem in the Morra!>.

FSR: Esserman describes both players as "NM," implying that they were rated over 2199 but below 2400. http://usclnews.blogspot.com/2011/1...

Jul-09-16  garland: 11. Ke2!!??

Two exclams for the freshness and creativity of youth. And two question marks for the ignorance and naivety of, well, youth. (Esserman's comment)

FSR: This is a very cool game. Should be GOTD, but
I don't have a pun for it, and we know that is by far the most important thing.

  FSR: Stockfish 15 is extremely confused by 11.Ke2!!?? It keeps changing its evaluation, which is very unusual. One line that it gives is 11... dxe5 (11...cxd4 is also playable) 12. Rxh7 Kxh7 13. Qh1+ Kg8 14. Bxg6 Rf4 15. dxe5 Bxf3+ 16. gxf3 Qd5 17. Bxf4 Qc4+ 18. Bd3 Qxf4 19. Rg1 Qxe5+ 20. Kf1 Nc6 21. f4 Qxc3 22. Qd5+ Kf8 23. Bc4 Qh3+ 24. Ke2 e6 25. Qd6+ Ne7 26. Rxg7 Qh5+ 27. Kf1 Kxg7 28. Qxe7+ with equality. Many of both sides' moves are forced.
