May-20-11 | | parisattack: <wordfunph: <FSR> 14 elo points better than us.. :)> 14^ to me! |
May-20-11 | | suenteus po 147: Gelfand's exchange sac to foil the mating net was very nice indeed. This promises to be a great match before it's over. |
May-20-11 | | Caissanist: Is there any consensus as to whether or not Grischuk missed a win here? Shipov gives 37..Rb3 and ..Rb3 as stronger than 37..a5. |
May-20-11 | | Scarecrow: Very, very good, very deep game. |
May-20-11 | | AVRO38: Excellent game by both sides! |
May-20-11 | | messachess: <jessicafischerqueen: <Grischuk's> 0.00 on his clock there is not visually impressive.> She's back!! The queen is back, bestowing her royal presence on her (mostly not so) loyal subjects. All hail the queen! Long live her (you know she's been absent the game pages because of some disagreements, apparently, about comments) elocutions excelente!!! |
May-20-11 | | messachess: <jessicafischerqueen> OK, that was a nice mild start to your return. Now, ratchet it up bit by bit and test the limits of that old spice. Thank you very much. |
May-20-11 | | messachess: By the way, heck of a game. What's it take to get a win around here? |
May-20-11 | | haydn20: For what it's worth, Fritz 12 gives 37...Rb3 38 Rxh5 Rxd3 39 Rhc5 Bd7 40 h5 Nb5 as a slight plus for Black. I guess White's h pawn and play on the c file may be enough to hold. |
May-20-11 | | lost in space: Wow, even though there are still 2 draws - as always you might think - it seems that the 2 remaining candidates remembered the saying that you can lose if you are fighting - but that you are already lost if you are not fighting. Two very well played draws. And the second even better than the first. Gelfand is the one bringing back the live into the candidates. Like him and wish him now the win. |
May-20-11 | | Ulhumbrus: 33...Nc7! is very unpleasant for White as it threatens the b4 pawn. After 34 g4 Rxb4 35 Kg3 fxg4 36 fxg4 Bxg4 37 Rf6+ Kd7 38 Rxg6 it is possible that as in the game a hard fight will lead to a draw. So far in both games Gelfand has gained a disadvantageous ending but has then defended perfectly and drawn after a hard fight. If Gelfand has done this well when he has stood worse, what is going to happen if Gelfand gets the advantage? This suggests that Grischuk had better look out. |
May-20-11 | | kia0708: excellent game, fascinating middle game |
May-20-11 | | checkmateyourmove: you would think black color home prepped to get into this position , more so than white.. but made for an exciting game and nice save for white. |
May-20-11 | | wordfunph: Alexander Grischuk took his jacket off after Gelf's 23.♕e3+.. http://www.chess.co.uk/twic/chessne... |
May-20-11 | | tud: Gelfand will win. Grischuk has more talent but he is not prepared. Not prepared at all, and clueless about how he reached the Candidates final. |
May-21-11 | | sevenseaman: Except for a win forcing idea, Gelfand has played this game well. I thought Boris had the aggressive looking <15. Bf6> to put Alexander in a tizzy! Surely the Q is worth a punt. |
May-21-11 | | sevenseaman: <vonKrolock: <14...Qd4> And now 15.Bf6 sugests itself ...> and < vonKrolock: An not exactly because of the exchange Q vs R + 2N, but because the alternatives do not looks satisfactory... Even so, Gelfand preferred 15. Nxc3 - maybe he will be compelled to force a draw with the line 16.b5 with idea of Rc1, Bd2 etc !?> The two above are the only references to the Bf6 idea. The game could have gone 15...Qxf6 16. Nxf6+ Bxf6. Thoughts? |
May-21-11 | | polarmis: Here's my final version of GM Sergey Shipov's live commentary on this game: http://www.chessintranslation.com/2... (I've also included the Russian video he made after the game for the really curious!) |
May-21-11 | | sevenseaman: <15...Qxf6 16. Nxf6+ Bxf6. Thoughts?> Very wishful, it could have been worse. After seeing Shipov's comments the text was the best. A draw it is. |
May-21-11 | | BUNA: Have a look at 31. ...Kd7! (instead of the more natural Kd6), that GM Shipov mentioned in his after-game analysis. The point is:
1. it would have allowed
32. Kf2 Rb8
33. e4 Nc7
34. g4 Rxb4!
because there is no 35. e5+
2. it would have prevented the possible pin of blacks Bishop (Rf6) in certain lines. That must have been the move Grischuk (and most commentators) missed! |
May-21-11 | | Nuxias: What about 52. Rxh7 Re3+ and taking the pawn on d3? It seems like a win for black? |
May-21-11 | | BUNA: <Nuxias>
Maybe:
52. Rxh7 Re3+
53. Kf2 Rxd3
54. Ke2
and now
a)
54. ... Kc4
to stop whites king from advancing loses the rook
b)
54. ... Rg3
55. Ra7 a3
56. Kd2 a2
57. Kc2!
and whites king moves to the corner.
-> draw
IMHO! |

May-21-11 | | howlwolf: Polarmis,
Thanks for the link. Shipov's analysis and commentary is great on this amazing game. |

Aug-03-11 | | cludi: Watch my video analysis which was uploaded immediately after the game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjXL... |

Aug-03-11 | | Blunderdome: Grischuk was right, classical chess is dead. |
