Jun-21-11  Gordon1306: Yep , it over .
Jun-21-11  Ulhumbrus: <Gordon1306: So the 'drawish' game peters out to a loss for Nakamura.> That is because a drawish game is one where some tiny difficulty gives the opponent some enormous asset.
Jun-21-11  LucB: DONE!!
Jun-21-11  hedgeh0g: Whoop whoop! Long overdue.
Jun-21-11  Gordon1306: Naka still holds on to third place.

lol

Jun-21-11  Gordon1306: Thanks to Chessgames for the coverage. Great stuff!
Jun-21-11  vanytchouck: I can't help remembering Kasparov's sentence when he won a tournament only losing to Tchouky :

" i was mad at him because he's played so well against me after playing so badly the whole tournament" ...

Jun-21-11  WinKing: Thanks for sharing the games with all of us chessgames! Well done.
Jun-21-11  Morten: Thank you chessgames. That last part was like witnessing the Sack of Rome.

Jun-21-11  rogl: I remember Kasparov's line being something like "He played like a patzer in this tournament but against me he played like Ivanchuk". For instance, he lost as white in 19 moves against Judit. The tourney was Linares 1997 and the game was Ivanchuk vs Kasparov, 1997.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Over its history, the Exchange Slav has been considered everything from a hopelessly boring drawing line to almost a forced win for White. Perhaps it will now regain a reputation for being at least mildly venomous.

Thank you, ChessGames, for covering the tourney.

Jun-22-11  hedgeh0g: I still can't get over the speed at which Ivanchuk was playing his games in this tournament. He could have started his clock, gone out for a stroll, watched a movie and still have enough time left to win this game.
Jun-22-11  Brettwith2ts: Evening, all. I see I missed some really masterful play by Ivanchuk.

Some comments/questions I had while playing over the moves;

It seems like the move ...Ne8 somewhere in the vicinity of move 18 could have saved Nakamura some headaches; ...Ne8 followed by ...Nd6, trading or driving off the Nb5 would have taken one of white's strongest pieces off of an advanced square. Is there any reason this wouldn't have worked?

29)Nc3 deserves an ! in my book, for the clever little maneuver around to e5 that it starts.

At move 46, I think it's great that instead of defending his 'loose' pawn on a4 (which Naka cannot take), Ivanchuk creates another 'loose' pawn that Naka can't have, almost like he were toying with him. Then, on move 55, he does it all again! I think Ivanchuk was having too much fun with the 'poisoned pawn' motif.

A very well played game by our Ukrainian GM.

  perfidious: <Helloween: 34...f5? 1-0>

This is fair commentary, even against a mere 2400 player on the White side of this, and an astonishing lack of understanding from a top-class GM.

Nakamura was probably already reduced to waiting moves such as 34....Rac8, though even this looks clearly worse for him, as White can calmly strengthen his position-there's no hurry.

Jun-22-11  hedgeh0g: <perfidious> To be fair, there weren't many other options. The only piece Black can move is his a-rook and while he shuffles that back and forth, he is at the mercy of White's increasing pressure. ...f5 is about the only active move Black can make, bad as it is.
Aug-01-11  paavoh: @FSR: Perhaps Keres was still a tad better?
Feb-10-13  wordfunph: Chuky admitted after the game that 'a girl on Skype' had asked him to open with 1.d4 and followed her request.
May-17-19  amadeus: Ivanchuk - A girl told me "please play d4"
