Feb-11-13  Ulhumbrus: <goldenbear: <Ulhumbrus> That's true, but then Bc4, with the threat of Bb5...> Then ...Rxc4. However White can threaten Bf5 instead by 31 Bg8 Rxf2 32 Bxh7. Then on 32..Kd6 Black has not won a pawn but Black's king has a lead in development.
Feb-11-13  goldenbear: I like Rxf7 here, and I still like White...

FSR: So are we sure that Daniel Fridman and Daniel Freeman are really different people?
Feb-11-13  MTuraga: Computer eval:

Anand - Naiditsch : +5.26

others look like draws

Feb-11-13  goldenbear: Bxf7 was obviously stronger than Rxf7...

FSR: Now Houdini says dead equal: 0.00 after either Rg1 or Rf1.
Feb-11-13  MTuraga: It is the end for Naiditsch.....Anand should win...
Feb-11-13  goldenbear: I have to go... my psychic abilities are telling me it will be a draw.

FSR: Houdini at first like 32...Rc1 a bit for Black, now giving 33.c4 dead equal. Handshake time.
Feb-11-13  Ulhumbrus: Black has been trying hard to avoid a draw but by now I doubt whether he can gain more than a draw
Feb-11-13  Marmot PFL: Naiditsch will have to play much more accurate chess if he wants a respectable score in the Corus A section next year.
Feb-11-13  cubikova: Where is the link to Anand-Naidits
ch?
Feb-11-13  Ulhumbrus: <cubikova: Where is the link to Anand-Naidits ch?> Anand has won. It appears that his opponent offered an unsound piece sacrifice and lost. Here is a link to the live games page on the official website: http://www.grenkechessclassic.de/en...
Feb-11-13  haydn20: 33. c3 is not as accurate as 33. c4, as in some variations the White B needs to go to d5 with support. Maybe it ain't done yet.
Feb-11-13  Ulhumbrus: White may have missed a win by 36 Bh7 Rc1 37 Bf5 Rd1 38 Rxd7+ Rxd7 39 Bxd7 Kxd7 40 Ke4 with an advantageous king and pawn ending
Feb-11-13  haydn20: <Ulhumbrus: White may have missed a win by 36 Bh7 Rc1 37 Bf5 Rd1 38 Rxd7+ Rxd7 39 Bxd7 Kxd7 40 Ke4 with an advantageous king and pawn ending > After 36. Bh7 why not just 36...Rxb2 ?
Feb-11-13  mrbasso: It wasn't an unsound piece sacrifice, it was a blunder for sure. He missed h4 I guess.
Feb-11-13  Eyal: A pity (for the game) that Fridman didn't try the more ambitious 22...Qb7, avoiding a queen exchange and keeping the attack, in order to get more out of Caruana's careless 18.axb5?; after the game the players were looking at 23.Qxe5 (not just grabbing a pawn but also defending b2) 23...a3 24.b3 (interestingly, Houdini's top recommendations are 24.Rd3 & 24.Bd5, but a human naturally doesn't want to give up the b2 pawn like that) 24...Rb5 25.Qd4 Bf5 26.Rhe1:

and here Black has to invest a tempo in a move like 26...h6 to prepare Rc8 (otherwise there's mate on d8), but he clearly has a strong initiative going.

Feb-11-13  Marmot PFL: The Petroff is a solid drawing weapon and ambition is dangerous. Most likely black would have lost or at least increased his chances of losing.
Feb-11-13  beenthere240: Perhaps I should I refer to as a sacrifice every piece that I hang, blunder away, or simply don't notice that it's en prise.

Feb-11-13  Ulhumbrus: <haydn20: <Ulhumbrus: White may have missed a win by 36 Bh7 Rc1 37 Bf5 Rd1 38 Rxd7+ Rxd7 39 Bxd7 Kxd7 40 Ke4 with an advantageous king and pawn ending > After 36. Bh7 why not just 36...Rxb2 ?> 37 Bf5 attacking a second time the pinned bishop on d7
Feb-11-13  Eyal: <[36 Bh7 Rxb2] 37 Bf5 attacking a second time the pinned bishop on d7> The bishop isn't pinned - the black king is on d6, so this move just drops the bishop.
Feb-12-13  Ulhumbrus: <<[36 Bh7 Rxb2] 37 Bf5 attacking a second time the pinned bishop on d7> The bishop isn't pinned - the black king is on d6, so this move just drops the bishop.> I stand corrected. In that case White did not miss a win by 36 Bh7.
Feb-14-15  patzer2: After 7...Nc6, Black never seems to be in any trouble in this game.

A clever defensive resource was 18...a4! (diagram below):

Here, if 19. Bxa4??, then 19...Qa7! is winning .

Following the strongest reply 19. Bc4 cxb5 , Black has a comfortable game and no trouble holding the draw.
