FSR: Where the hell is that <Like> button when you need it? :-)
Apr-16-15  Ratt Boy: Does anyone like White's 8th move, ♗d3? I only did a brief look at the database and didn't see any other instances of it. Doesn't look good to me.

offramp: I have submitted a few puns, and I am always pleased when the monitor reads, "Your pun has been accepted!"

I thought that meant that it had not already been used. I THOUGHT that a pun previously used would be cancelled out! I was wrong.

Apr-16-15  kevin86: Black extends his exchange win into a game victory.
Apr-16-15  Eduardo Leon: What would happen if 17.♕c2?
Apr-16-15  mruknowwho: Eduardo Leon: 17.Qc2 might be fine, but beware of 17...c4 (threatening Bxa3) 18.Bxf8 Kxf8 19.dxc4 (not 19.bxc4? because of 19...Nb4!) 19...Bg4. Black has a pin that's a little awkward for White and he has a chance to gain tempo.

Well, I don't like it either, but actually it seems to be theory. In fact, I hear that it revitalized the entire Two Knights line for White, which is why it's still relevant today. This database has 26 similar games, and the shortest of them deviates after <9.Nf3>, so they all include <8.Bd3>.

I think the general idea is that any other retreat costs White more time than his pawn is worth, and Black gets the first attack. Black might be perfectly happy to sac a pawn for the speed-up, c.f. Evans Gambit with fast Rb8-Ba6. 8.Bf1 is clearly bad, 8.Be2 too passive (8..e4 lets Black kick the Ng5 around), 8.Ba4 has the union of all ills (weak e4, weak a6-f1 diagonal, B hangs) for a cheesy pin.

<8.Bd3> accepts momentary congestion to control e4 (e.g. 8..h6 9.Ne4 now sucks for Black). Black can just develop normally and play a pawn down with slightly more space.

Black plays Bd6 in front of a d7-pawn in many Sicilian lines, for similar reasons: either tactics will auto-fix it before it hurts much, or White hurts himself in other ways to duck those tactics.

Apr-16-15  Moszkowski012273: Is NOT taking the second pawn on move 13 theory?
Apr-16-15  mruknowwho: Well, if he doesn't play 8.Bd3, then the only other sensible move I can think of is 8.Ba4. But I don't particularly like 8.Ba4 because it implies White wants to challenge the pawn on c6. I think it's better to challenge the light squares on the king side (which White does by playing 8.Bd3.) Unfortunately, White gets himself in trouble later because he ends up challenging the same pawn I was referring to with a blunder (17.Bxc5??). I also considered 8.Qf3? but unfortunately this is actually a big mistake after 8...Bg4!
Apr-16-15  Gilmoy: Well, <13.Nxe5> is a known line. In this database:

5 games (+1=1-3) 13.Nxe5 Re8 14.d4
6 games (+2=2-2) 13.Nc3

The lesson seems to be: for an equal game, develop your Q-side (and play the game with all of your toys).

If White takes the 2nd pawn, Black can force the retreat with f6, then dogpile Bg4. White has WBR and undeveloped Q-side, like Marshall Attack but worse. If WBR forces gxf3, then Black's ideal Bd6 supports snap mate threats at h2. Rxe8+ doesn't help because of WBR, and White almost always ducks with Rf1 -- a meek price of two tempi for the pawn.

Black can also play 14.d4 c5 and just play two pawns down with long-term pressure. White almost always returns the material just to breath.

Apr-16-15  Moszkowski012273: Thanks! Yeah I looked at it for a bit after I commented... It does get sketchy.
