 | | Peligroso Patzer: Sorry to see Fabiano eliminated, but the bind White has established in final position of this game has great aesthetic appeal. If Black tries to bide his time with <66. … Kf8>, White does not even need to penetrate with his King. After <67. h6>, zugzwang will soon arise. Black can run the b-pawn a few moves (three), but White just runs it down with his King, after which any King or Knight move by Black quickly allows White to promote. |

Aug-25-13 | | ajile: Pretty clever of White to delay development of his c4 and queen knight. Black's early 3..d6 means he loses a tempo to play ..d5 since a regular Dutch Stonewall formation is the best way to combat White's Nc3 in front of the c2 pawn. If Black delays ..d6 and instead plays ..g6 and ..Bg7 White will normally run out of moves to transpose and will have to commit his c pawn and Q knight. But after Black loses a move it gives White an extra tempo to transpose back into a regular Dutch with 8.Nb5 9.c4 and 10.Nc3. The point is White wants to pressure d5 in a normal Dutch Stonewall. |

Aug-25-13 | | jphamlore: Caruana having to resort to the Dutch at short time control in such an important event where he was so close to qualifying automatically for the Candidates is shocking to me. Has Caruana lost all confidence in his Slav as Black with which it appears he has had some losses lately? http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... |

 | | HeMateMe: 48. N-e5 is one sexy move. Very creative way of exploiting black's cramped position. I like busting the Dutch center in blitz with f3, e4 pawn moves. It was quite awhile before that occurred in this game. I guess Timing is everything. |

 | | HeMateMe: <notyetagm> Do you also have a file for TNs hatched while a player is on the throne, having a B.M.? Just curious. I want to know if you have all bases covered. |

White plays for e4 to bust open the center and expose Black's k-side weaknesses. The quick Nc3, Bg5, f3 idea is especially annoying to a Leningrad Dutch player. This is why the normal answer to these lines is for Black to play or transpose into a Stonewall formation with pawns on f5 and d5. |
