Jul-19-16  catlover: Thanks, <ajile> for the link to the Barj/Koop game. Looks like 3...Nc6 is playable despite the disastrous result in this game.
Jul-19-16  jith1207: <posoo>: Are you running this web site now? ;-)
Jul-20-16  TheBish: Wow, CG really likes this game... GOTD for the second straight day!
Jul-20-16  Ratt Boy: <TheBish: Wow, CG really likes this game... GOTD for the second straight day!>

Glad they left it up, as I did not get the pun yesterday. This morning, for some reason, it was finally as obvious to me as it should have been.

offramp: This is rapidly becoming NOT my favourite pun.
Jul-20-16  Hodor: Hold the draw! Hold the draw!!
Jul-20-16  KID Slayer: Where's the GOTD for today? This game was put up again on the front page.
Jul-20-16  kevin86: Deja vu all over again:_Yogi Berra.
Jul-21-16  posoo: Posoo DID it! Now all da popple on here who think dat I am DUMM (and beleve it or not they are OUT THERE) will have to look at DIS game and see a little insite into da mind of da old pose.
Feb-28-17  Timi: Haha! Nepom in the mourning, good pun
Aug-06-23  Cecco: Black could win quickly with 20. Red1. To be honest the engine pointed this out to me because, like maybe White, I was reluctant to give the black king an escape to e7. But it's easy to verify that for black to bring the king to e7 only makes things worse.

P.S. - The pun is really well thought out. The problem is that calling to mind something as awful as napalm for a pun seems too creepy.

al wazir: What's wrong with 17...Rc7 instead off 17...Qc7 ?

After 18. Nxf7 Qxd1 19. Rxd1 (19. Qxd1 Kxf7) Rxf7, black has ♖+♗+♗ vs. ♕+♙+♙+♙, almost even.

Of course black's position is a bit cramped.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Already knew this one; after 8 years, still love that 38th move killer.
Jan-21-24  mel gibson: I didn't see that.
It is an "insane" puzzle so I can be forgiven.

Stockfish 16 did and declines the Knight:

14. Nf5

(14. Nf5 (1.Nf5 0-0 2.Nxg7 Kxg7 3.Rd3 Rg8 4.Rh3 Kf8 5.Nd5 exd5 6.Qh6+ Rg7 7.Rg3 d4 8.Qxg7+ Ke7 9.Rf3 Qh8 10.Qxh8 Rxh8 11.Rd3 Rc8 12.Rc1 Be6 13.b3 b5 14.Rxd4 f5 )
+4.97/48 210)

score for White +4.97 depth 48.

If I force SF to accept the Knight:

14. .. exf5

15. exf5+ (15. exf5+ (1.exf5+ Kf8 2.Ne4 Kg8 3.Nxd6 Qf8 4.Nxc8 Bxc8 5.Re3 h6 6.Rde1 Bd7 7.Re7 Bc6 8.Rc7 Rh7 9.Ree7 Kh8 10.Rxf7 Qe8 11.Rfe7 Qxh5 12.Rc8+ Qe8 13.Rcxe8+ Bxe8 14.Rxe8+ Bf8) +6.03/49 290)

score for White +6.03 depth 49.

Jan-21-24  Olavi: <al wazir> 17...Rc7 18.Nxb7 is conclusive.
Jan-21-24  GlennOliver: Definitely a candidate for Bartel's Immortal Game.

What is equally instructive about this game is the number of apparently obvious continuing moves which Bartel DIDN'T choose, having already seen more deeply.

18...Qa8. Now what? White is clearly winning, but after 19. Nd6 h6 I see no quick mate or gain of more material.

Jan-21-24  1stboard: Quite a slug-fest to see who got in the last shot .....
Jan-21-24  jffun1958: I like the finish.
Jan-21-24  Messiah: <jffun1958: I like the finish.>

I don't.

Jan-22-24  Arlekhino: <al wazir: <Olavi: 17...Rc7 18.Nxb7> 18...Qa8. Now what? White is clearly winning, but after 19. Nd6 h6 I see no quick mate or gain of more material.>

After the attempt to defend with 17... Rc7 18. Nxb7 really seems to be decisive, because if 18... Qa8 (or b8 or c8), instead of 19. Nd6 White can actually gain material with 19. Rd8+ Qxd8 20. Nxd8, and now Black can't activate the Rook on h8 or the Bishop on g7, neither can he coordinate successfully the other Rook and the light-squared Bishop against White's active Queen, Rook and Knight. For example: 20... Bd5 21. Qd1 Rd7 22. c4 Rxd8 23. cxd5 etc. or 20... Bb5 21. b3 Rd7 22. c4 Bxc4 23. bxc4 Rxd8 24. c5 etc. It is as if White was a full Queen ahead, not to mention the pawn surplus.
