Jun-21-17  saturn2: White is up a rook. It is all about a crosspin
21..Bc6 22 Be4 Qg6 23 Rf4 BxRf4
a 25 Kg1 Be3+ wins the queen
b 25 Q escapes from the pin BxB+ 26 Kg1 and now white is down a bishop
Jun-21-17  leRevenant: Pantzar Division unable to ward off Rodshtein incursion.
Jun-21-17  leRevenant: However, I dips me lid to <ChessHigherCat: The Pinned Pantzar>
Jun-21-17  gofer: Doh! I should have seen the "X-ray" straight away, but for some reason didn't. I went with a much more basic approach...

<23 Kh2 Be4>

Somehow the 4 connected pawns (two of them being slightly bigger than the other two) seem rather good!

25 gxf4 Bxf4+

26 Kg1 Be3+ (Rxf4 Qxf4+ 27 Kg1 Qg3+ 28 Kf1 Bd3 )

27 Rf2 Bd3!! (Kh2 Qe5+ 28 Rf4 Qxf4# or Qxe3 Qg6+ 28 Kf2 Qg2+ 29 Ke1 dxe3 )

So what does <Fritz> say to my plan? Good!? Garbage?!

Jun-21-17  The Kings Domain: Nice puzzle and good game. The last move was a nice touch.
Jun-21-17  cocker: I was tempted by 21 ... Qxf5 22 Rxf5 Bc6+, but then White has 23 Rd5. In the game, White fought to the bitter end.
Jun-21-17  Whitehat1963: Is today really Wednesday?
Jun-21-17  PJs Studio: Funny! I missed the double pin, but found a very similar move in a tournament game OTB twenty three years ago!
Jun-21-17  gofer: One further thought... ...did white miss a winning endgame!?

Jun-21-17  morfishine: Nice posts

Jun-21-17  MrCarciofo: with the line played in the match black gains the white queen, but I think it's good also - despite the satisfaction of being the only one with the queen in the match - ...Qxf5, and if Qxf5, then ...Bc6+; Rf3, gxf5; then white is forced to free his king (h4) and so Bxf3+ and black has gained a Bishop and a Rook - I think it's a won final too.
Jun-21-17  et1: Bg6 brilliant move
Jun-21-17  ChessHigherCat: <MrCarciofo: I think it's good also - ...Qxf5, and if Qxf5, then ...Bc6+; Rf3, gxf5; then white is forced to free his king (h4) and so Bxf3+ and black has gained a Bishop and a Rook - I think it's a won final too.>

I was looking at that line, too, but white isn't forced to play h4 if he plays RxQ:

21. Qxf5 Rxf5 22. Bf3 Re5 23. exd5 Qxe3 24. dxc+ Kg1 25. dxe3 bxc

Jun-21-17  mel gibson: I missed that.

The computer agrees - it's an easy pin when you see it:

21. Bxf5 Bc6+ (21. .. Bc6+ (♗d7-c6+ ♗f5-e4 ♕f6-g6 ♗e4xc6 ♕g6xd3 ♗c6xb7 ♖a8-f8 ♖f1xf8+ ♔g8xf8 ♗b7-g2 ♕d3-e2 ♗b2-a3+ ♔f8-g8 ♗g2-f1 ♕e2-h5 ♗f1-g2 d4-d3 ♖a1-f1 g7-g6 ♗g2-f3 ♕h5-a5 ♗a3-d6 h7-h5 ♗f3-d1 ♕a5xa2 ♗d6-e5 ♕a2-a5 ♗e5-b2 ♕a5-d2 ♗b2-e5 ♗e3-c5) +2.93/21 153)

score for black +2.93 depth 21

Jun-21-17  MrCarciofo: Thanks <ChessHigherCat>! I prefer these lines with the Queen taking the B.
Jun-21-17  psmith: <gofer> 22... Be6 looks like a better try in that line: 23. Bxd7 Rb8 24. Qxe3 dxe3 25. Bxf6 Rxb7 26. Bg5. Still better for White, but better pawn structure for Black and opposite colored Bishops.
Jun-21-17  Pasker: Very cool tactic tactic (22 ..Qg6)
Jun-21-17  kevin86: The double pin costs white his queen.

  doubledrooks: 21...Bc6+ 22.Be4 Qg6 23.Rf4 Bxf4 24.Re1 Be3 works for me.

gawain: I ran through a lot of possibilities for using the move ...Bc6+ Should it be the opening move of the combination? The second? The coup de grace, to be delivered later? Eventually I settled on the winning answer.
Jun-21-17  morfishine: <20.Be4> looks inaccurate. White should've taken advantage of his own pin and played <20.Qxe3> 20...dxe3 21.Bxf6

*****

Jun-21-17  patz8491: Waht am I missing here? Doesn't ...39.QxR win instantly? Whether White takes the Queen or not, nothing can stop the black pawn from queening.
Jun-21-17  morfishine: <patz8491> You are not missing anything.

I still like my earlier improvement <20.Qxe3>

*****

Jun-22-17  patzer2: As <gofer>'s post suggests, White's decisive mistake was 21...exf5? allowing today's Wednesday puzzle solution 22...Bc6+! 22. Be4 Qg6! (-2.46 @ 20 depth, Deep Fritz 15.)

Instead, <gofer>'s suggestion 21. Rxf5! gives White the advantage after 21...exf5 22. Bd5+ Be6 23. Bxb7 Rb8 24. Qxe3! dxe3 25. Bxf6 Rxb7 26. Bg5 (+0.71 @ 21 depth, Deep Fritz 15.)

Jun-25-17  morfishine: Yes, but <20.Qxe3> deserves a serious look as <patzer2> seems to overlook this move
