 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Might have found a winning but second-best line--10.Nxe7,Bxf6; 11.Qxd8+,Nxd8; 12.Nd5 seems to fork Bf6 and pawn at c7. If correct, the extra pawn should win eventually, but the game continuation is better. |
|
Oct-20-17 | | agb2002: The material is identical.
White can take advantage of the position of the black king with 10.Bxe7+ Nxe7 11.Nb6: A) 10... Qxd1+ 11.Rxd1 and the double threat Rd8# and Nxa8 wins decisive material. B) 10... Qe8 11.Nxa8 + -.
C) 10... Bd7 11.Nxd7+ wins a piece.
D) 10... Nc6 11.Nxa8 + -. |
|
Oct-20-17 | | Bluegrey: After Ne7 black should play Qd1 first and then the bishop can return to d8 to protect the c7 pawn at the end of the line |
|
Oct-20-17 | | clement41: I wrongly went 10 Nxe5 Bxf6 11 Nxf6 Qxd1+ 12 Rxd1 Nxe5 13 Rd8+ Kg7 14 Ne8+ and saw nothing better than the repetition ...Kh7 Nf6+ Kg7 (...Kg8/f8? Nxc7+ Kg7 Rxh8 Kxh8 Nxa8 +-) Ne8+ etc.
Actually, the engine likes to sac the exchange on e8 and gives a slight edge to black after that |
|
Oct-20-17 | | gofer: It didn't take long to spot the idea of <10 Bxe7+ Nxe7> setting up a back
rank mate when we move Nd5. Also it was clear that the mate threat can't be avoided by <11 ... Qxd1+>, because <12 Rxd1> re-instates the threat. But I didn't make much more progress than that for a while as I rejected it looking at other possible threats. When they all disappeared I came back to it again and realised that I didn't have to follow <10 Bxe7+ Nxe7> with <11 Nxc7 or Nxe7 or Nf6>. Instead we can look a little tangentially and simply win an exchange!!!! <10 Bxe7+ Nxe7> <11 Nb6! ...>
Nice! |
|
Oct-20-17 | | gofer: <Bluegrey>: I am not quite sure the line you are describing. Can you give
a bit more detail...?
click for larger viewI think Ivanchuk's response is the only one that does not lose an
exchange <and the c7 pawn> as well! |

Oct-20-17 | | goodevans: <gofer: <Bluegrey>: I am not quite sure the line you are describing. Can you give a bit more detail...?> In case you don't get a response from <Bluegrey>, I took this to refer to the line <10.Nxe7 Qxd1+ 11.Rxd1 Bxf6 12.Nd5 Bd8> being black's best response to 10.Nxe7. I think that's right, but black needs to be wary of <13.Nxe5 Nxe5 14.Nb6>. I think this is still good for black - he can let the exchange drop as not only does the capture of the rook allow black to seize the initiative but it's also not clear that white will ever get the knight back out of the corner. |

Oct-20-17 | | thegoodanarchist: 11.Nb6! is the most surprising move I've seen all week, by far |
|
Oct-20-17 | | ChatGrognon: Great tactic indeed! |
|
Oct-20-17 | | Pasker: Nb6! incredible!! A rare tactic. |
|
Oct-20-17 | | patzer2: As <Jamboree> observes, Black's decisive mistake was 9...Kf8?, which misses the clever discovered attack 10. Bxe7+ Nxe7 11. Nb6! +- solving today's Friday (10. ?) puzzle. Instead of 9...Kf8?, our Stockfish analysis application indicates 9...Bxf6 (not 9...0-0? 10. Nxe7+ Nxe7 11. Qxd8 Rxd8 12. Bxe7 +-) 10. Nxf6+ Kf8 11. Qxd8+ Nxd8 12. Nd5 Nxd5 13. cxd5 ⩲ (+0.49 @ 23 depth) keeps Black in the fight for the draw. |

Oct-20-17 | | patzer2: <clement41: I wrongly went 10 Nxe5 Bxf6 11 Nxf6 Qxd1+ 12 Rxd1 Nxe5 13 Rd8+ Kg7 14 Ne8+> That was also my failed attempt at today's (10. ?) Friday puzzle. As you note the engine likes to sac the exchange, and gives an edge to Black after that. Our Stockfish application, after 10. Nxe5, gives -0.72 (25 ply) 10...Bxf6 11.Nxf6 Qxd1+ 12.Rxd1 Nxe5 13.Rd8+ Kg7 14.Ne8+ Rxe8 15.Rxe8 N5c6 16.Be2 Rb8 17.f3 Be6 18.Rxb8 Nxb8 19.Kd2 c5 20.f4 Nec6 21.a3 Nd4 22.Bd3 Nbc6 23.Ke3 a5 24.Rf1 g5 25.g3 b6 26.fxg5 hxg5 |

Oct-20-17 | | patzer2: Earlier in the game, instead of the rarely played 6...Nge7!?, our Opening Explorer indicates the popular and computer preference is 6...f6 as in the drawn Super GM game A Giri vs Carlsen, 2015. |
|
Oct-20-17 | | kevin86: Black took a while getting started. |
|
Oct-20-17 | | King Harvest: The correct idea jumped out at me as the first thing to investigate, but I couldn't find Nb6 because I vapor locked at: "black always has a simple answer to any discovery when I move the knight. He simply initiates the exchange of Q's with check and I've got nothing." Grrr. Wrong. |

Oct-20-17 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: <FSR>,
At the end of your line, Black's e-pawn appears to be hanging, and in particular to be hanging to White's en prise knight. |
