Jan-04-18 | | patzer2: For today's Thursday puzzle (21...?), I calculated 21...Nxf2! 22. Kxf2 Rxd2+ 23. Rxd2 Ne4+ -+ (-3.75 @ 31 ply, Stockfish 8) with a winning Knight Fork. White's reply 21...Nxf2! 22. Re1 caught me a by surprise, but I figured throwing a monkey wrench into the works with 22...Ncd3 -+ (-4.24 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 8) must be a win for Black. White's decisive mistake was 21. h3?, allowing our puzzle solution 21...NXf2! -+. Instead, 21. Qg3 Nh6 22. b4 (0.00 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 8) keeps White in the fight. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | diagonalley: hmmmmmmm... the first move is not difficult to find... and (given the incursion it leads to) should probably be played OTB anyway... but the possible continuations appear numerous... too many for lesser mortals to calculate with any degree of certainty |
|
Jan-04-18 | | anonymous17: I wonder if 23...Nxh3+ 24. gxh3 Qc6 25. Ne4 Qg6+ 26. Bg2 Nf4 27. Qc2 f5 would not be better than the game continuation for black |
|
Jan-04-18 | | saturn2: 21..Nxf2 wins at least a pawn. Retaking is not good for white. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | Sularus: I considered Nf2 but couldn't see an immediate mate so I gave up :D |
|
Jan-04-18 | | Sularus: Nxf2 i mean |
|
Jan-04-18 | | NBZ: 21. ... Nxf2 22. Kxf2 Rxd2+ 23. Kg1 appears initially safe for White, but 23. ... Ne4 24. Qc1 Qc5+ 25. Kh2 Qf2! 26. Rxd2 Nxd2 with the threat of Nf3+ and Black wins easily. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: ... e4 isn't playable, but ... Nf2 happily is. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | mel gibson: Didn't see this.
The computer - DR4 64 bit - follows only the first move &
the King takes the black Knight on f2
which is different to the text move.
21. h3 Nxf2 (21. .. Nxf2 (♘g4xf2 ♔g1xf2 ♖d8xd2+ ♔f2-g1 ♘c5-e4

+2.55/20 227)
score for Black +2.55 depth 20.
I notice Stockfish 8 is giving +3.48 in this site's computer answer
but of course it's played out to 32 ply not 20. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | ChessHigherCat: I considered Nxf2 like everybody else, and also like everyone else, I didn't even come close to finding the mate in 9! Incredibly precise play by Kashlinskaya the Kalishnikov. More of a Sunday (or at least Saturday) puzzle than a Thursday. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | Whitehat1963: Thursday? |
|
Jan-04-18 | | gofer: The main point of this POTD is that the knight is immune. So
black wins a pawn. But more than that there is quite a lot to
see...
<21 ... Nxf2>
22 Kxf2? Rxd2+
23 Kg1 Ne4
24 Q move Rxb2 +-
22 Re1 Ncd3
23 Re3 Nxb2
24 Qxb2 ... -+
~~~
Hmmm, okay. I am glad I didn't look too far beyond the first move
winning the pawn. 1/2 a point?! |
|
Jan-04-18 | | WorstPlayerEver: Meh 40 secs |
|
Jan-04-18 | | claudi: This is not a easy one for me but thanks to Stockfish I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | morfishine: Blacks attack features a number of different but coordinated themes that finally result in White having no more. Very pleasing game to go over, and as for me as a necessity, multiple times ***** |
|
Jan-04-18 | | malt: Had 21...N:f2 22.Re1
(22.K:f2 R:d2+ 23.Kg1 Ne4)
22...Ncd3 23.B:d3 R:d3 24.Qc2 Qc5
25.Kf1 Rg3 |
|
Jan-04-18 | | Mayankk: Spotted Nf2 as capturing back doesn’t work for White. Rd2 wins the knight back and creates major weaknesses in the White king’s fort. So it definitely had to be the first move and not hard to find over-the-board. As for the rest, I would usually plan it when White moves next! |
|
Jan-04-18 | | agb2002: Black has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair. White threatens hxg4 and x-rays g7.
The position of the black knights and the white queen suggests 21... Nxf2: A) 22.Kxf2 Rxd2+
A.1) 23.Q(R)xd2 Ne4+ - + [q+p vs R+B].
A.2) 23.Ke1 Ne4 24.Qc1 Red8 followed by Qc5 looks winning for Black. A.3) 23.Kg1 Ne4 24.Qc1 Qc5+ 25.Kh2 (25.Kh1 Rxd1 26.Qxd1 Nf2+ wins) 25... Qf2 26.Rxd2 (26.Bc3 Rxd1 27.Qxd1 Nxc3 - + [n+p]) 26... Nxd2 and White looks defenseless against Nf3+ (27.Qd1 Nxf1 28.Qxf1 Qxb2; 27.h4 Nf3+ and mate next). A.4) 23.Kg3 Ne4+ wins decisive material.
A.5) 23.Ke3 Ne4 followed by Qc5+ mates or wins decisive material. B) 22.Re1 Ncd3 with an extra pawn and the plan Nxb2, Nd3, Qc5, f5, etc. looks very good for White. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | agb2002: I meant 'Black', not 'White', in my line B. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | mel gibson: This is interesting.
I normally use Deep Rybka 4 64 bit but
I downloaded Stockfish 8 64 bit-
the file was Stockfish_8_x64_popcnt.
and it gave this solution in the same time 227 seconds.22. Re1 (22. Kxf2 (♔g1xf2 ♖d8xd2+ ♖d1xd2 ♘c5-e4+
♔f2-g1 ♘e4xc3 ♗b2xc3 e5-e4 ♖a1-d1 e4-e3 ♖d2-d7 ♕c7-c6 ♖d7-d8 f7-f6 ♖d1-d6
♔g1-f1 ♔e6-e5 ♗a5-c3+ ♔e5-f4 h3-h4 ♔f4-g3 ♗c3-e1+ ♔g3-h2 ♗e2-f3 ♗c6xf3
g2xf3 ♖d7-d3 b3-b4 ♖d3-b3 ♔f1-e2 ♔h2-g2 c4-c5 ♖b3-b1 c5-c6 ♖b1-c1 ♔e2xe3
♖c1xc6 ♗e1-d2 ♖c6-c2) -3.54/35 227)
score for white -3.54 depth 35
What is strange is that Stockfish was only using about 12% of the CPU
yet DR4 was using about 50% CPU.
Stockfish has used less resources but gone deeper in the same time. Anyway - I tried a new game from the start having 2 Arena windows open &
matched Stockfish against DR4 - 5 seconds per move -
& it ended up as a draw.
So - each program is playing the same strength but DR4 uses more resources.
Can anyone explain that? |
|
Jan-04-18
 | | offramp: Black plays Pawn to King 5 then white plays Queen takes knight pawn with check but then Black plays Queen to rook seven and that is checkMATE! |
|
Jan-04-18 | | njchess: Got this one pretty easily. White has no counterattack, so it was a matter of finding Black's best move. Even though Rxd2 is tempting, it only amounted to exchanging pieces. Nxf2 not only gets the knight out of trouble, but it can't be taken due to Rxd2, Ne4+ taking White's queen. After 21. ... Nxf2 22. Re1 Nd3 the rest is academic. The knights won't be dislodged and all White can do is try to postpone the inevitable. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | Pchief: 21.f3 is clearly better than 21.h3:
(1) strengthens b7-g2 diagonal
(2) stops Nc5-e4 |
|
Jan-04-18
 | | Penguincw: Thursday puzzle now, and at this point, I'm on guess mode. Did not guess correctly. Oh well. |
|
Jan-04-18 | | mel gibson: I checked out Stockfish 8 with more games using Arena in tournament mode
& from 1 s each, 5 seconds each & 10 seconds each per move. If I let Stockfish play White it has always won against DR4 64 bit.
If Stockfish is Black it normally has a draw.
Stockfish is great with pawns - I hardly ever saw a nasty
double pawn -
it seems to know not to create them for itself.
It also moves supported pawns down the board just like a human would
and gets itself into great positions.
A nice free download and Arena is free too. |
