Apr-13-18  diagonalley: <nalinw Oh well - I am not the only one who didnt see 25. ... Qf5> ... me too!! drat and double drat :-(
Apr-13-18  gofer: Well, Rh8 is the target. If we can force Kd8, Ke8, Kf8 then the rooks get disconnected, so we want to play Qxe5, but its protected by Nd3, so can we remove the defender by taking it!? <25 Rxd3?> comes unstuck after <25 ... Qf5!>. So we need to find something else. Perhaps a deflection is on offer!

<25 Bc5+ ...>

25 ... Ke8?
26 Qxh8#

25 ... Kd8?
26 Qxh8 Kc7/Qe8
27 Qxh6 +-

25 ... Nxc5?
26 Qxe5+ Kd8 (Ne6??? d6+ +-)
27 Qxh8+ Kc7/Qe8
28 Qxh6 +-

<25 ... Rxc5>
<26 Qxh8 ...>

Okay, I am only two moves into the combination, but it's not looking that terrible for black, but I don't think black can allow Qxh6, so it has to be protected...

26 ... Rxd5
27 Qxh6 +-

<26 ... Qd6>
<27 g4 ...>

Is this best!? Not sure...

Pretty close...

Apr-13-18  WorstPlayerEver: I went for 25 Bxh6 but did not see 25... Qf5 (26. Qg5+ Qxg5 27. Bxg5+) 2 complicated for me.

26. Bc5+ Qf5 27. Ka1 Nxf2 Here I missed 28. d6+, therefore I picked 25. Bxh6

Apr-13-18  malt: Thought it was 25.R:d3 and 26.Q:e5+,
but 25...Qf5 scuppered that plan
Gone for 25.B:h6 Q:d5
(25...Qf5 26.Qg5+ Qf6 27.d6+ Ke6 28.Qg4+ )
26.Bg5+ Kd7 27.h6 Rhg8 28.Qf6 Qe6 29.h7 Rg6 30.h8/Q R:h8 31.Q:h8
Apr-13-18  saturn2: <This suggests 25.Rxd3, but Black has 25... Qf5.> I was seeing this but thought white has 26 g4. So I still went with 25 RxN
Apr-13-18  mel gibson: I didn't see that.

Stockfish 8 says -

25. Bc5+

(25. Bc5+

score for White +1.81 depth 29

Apr-13-18  eblunt: < al wazir , nalinw > count me in as well, I fell for the Rxd3 trap
Apr-13-18  mel gibson: <count me in as well, I fell for the Rxd3 trap>

But if pxR then it's all over for Black.

If black replies Q-f5 then it's draw.

Apr-13-18  catlover: Alas. I went with Rxd3 too. Didn't see the pin.
Apr-13-18  takchess: After Rxd3 my choice,expecting a pawn recapture. ...

  Jimfromprovidence: I saw 25.Bc5+ Rxc5 26.Qxh8 but rejected it because of 26...Rb5?!, below with a mate threat starting with 27...Rxb2+ .

The CG Stockfish output shows white is still winning.

It's a clever line so I will put it out there as a side puzzle for now.

Apr-13-18  ChessHigherCat: <JFP> Why not just 27. Rd2, e.g., Qf5 28. Ka1 Nxf2? 29. Rhg1
Apr-13-18  morfishine: <jimfromprovidence> I guess White has to play <27.Rd2> covering both <b2> & <f2>

  Jimfromprovidence: <morf> <ChesssHigherCat> Yes, 27 Rd2 is perfectly fine and winning.

Stockfish has a line that's a bit better beginning with 27 Rxd3, below. Chew on that for a while if you wish.

Apr-13-18  morfishine: <jimfromprovidence> I thought <27.Rxd3> was no good due to the pin <27...Qf5>

Hmmmmmm

Apr-13-18  ChessHigherCat: I think it must be 27. Rxd3 Qf5 28. Qxe5! Qxe5 29. Rde3! pinning the queen. Tricky, tricky
Apr-13-18  ismet: d1*d3 is better easy to win
Apr-13-18  ismet: Yes Cat Rd1*d3 u have kidney
Apr-13-18  ismet: Why there is no chessgames.com app or even no chessbase app

  Jimfromprovidence: <morf> <ChesssHigherCat> I did not see any of this. The line goes 27 Rxd3 Qf5 28 d6+!

Now comes 28...Kd7 29 Qf8, below (with the threat of 29 Qe7+ and mate next move)

Now comes 29...Qxd3+ 30 Kc1 Qxd6 31 Qxf7+ Kc6 32 Qxc4+

Anyway, after looking at all of this your 27 Rd2 looks better as it's simpler and almost as effective.

  perfidious: <nalinw: I have
25. Rxd3 cxd3
26. Qxe5+ Kd8 (e8, f8 seem to be worse
27. Qxh8+>

Unfortunately, I quickly reached the conclusion--as others have--that 25....Qf5 puts paid to that.

A clever trap that deserved a better fate.

Apr-13-18  ChessHigherCat: <JimFromProvidence> Yeah, that's what I meant, I just made a few mistakes in notation :-) No, seriously, that's wild, never in a million years would I have found that line.
Apr-13-18  njchess: I think I got this after a LOT of thought. First I had 25. ♖x♘ c4x♖ 26. ♕xe5+ ♔d8 27. ♕x♖+ ♕e8 and the attack fizzles. Then, it occurred to me if I could push the d pawn, with rook support, to d6, then the Black king gets pinned on the back rank.

Therefore, 25. ♗c5+ ♘x♗ 26. d6+ +-. So, 25. ♗c5+ ♖x♗ 26. ♕x♖ After that, things get a bit fuzzy but best would be 26. ... ♕f5 27. ♔a1 ♖xd5 28. ♕xh6 ±. Time to check.

Apr-13-18  ChessHigherCat: <njchess> You have the right ideas but I don't think it's so fuzzy (see post #1):

25. Bc5+ Nxc5 (Rxc5 26. Qxh8) 26. Qxe5+ Ne6 27. d6+ Ke8 28. Qxh8+ Nf8 29. Rhe1+ Kd8 30. Qxf8+ Qe8 31. Qxe8#
