Kibitzer's Corner
May-21-17  patzer2: Black's exchange sacrifice 12...Ne7!? 13. Bxa8 is interesting.

Previously played, in the only other game in the opening explorer after the rare 12. Rg1!?, was 12...Qd8 which was good for a draw in M Vachier-Lagrave vs A Giri, 2016.

After 12. Rg1!? the computers prefer 12...h4 13. b4 Bb6 14. a4 Rae8 = (+0.06 @ 30 depth, Stockfish 8.)

In the follow-up after 12...Ne7!? 13. Bxa8 Rxa8 14. g4 Qe6, the computer has a couple of suggestions to try and improve over 15. Nh4 to .

Instead of 15 Nh4 to (+0.57 @ 32 depth, Komodo 10.4), Stockfish 8 recommends 15. Be3 (+1.10 @ 34 depth) or 15. h4 (+1.06 @ 33 depth.)

May-21-17  patzer2: Running Stockfish 8 for over six hours to 40 depth yields 15. Be3 (+1.23 @ 40 depth) and 15. h4 ( +0.93 @ 40 depth.)

Looks like 15. Be3 might be White's best try for advantage.

  Richard Taylor: 12...b4 is playable. If 13. g4 bxc3 14 bxc3 Rab8 15. g5 hxg6 16. Bxg5 Qg6 17.Bxc6 Bxc6 18. Be7 Qh6 and if 18. Be7 Qh6 19. Bxf8 Bf2+! 20. Kxf2 Rb2+ with some advantage to Black...Black gets the Q for two Rooks and a good active game. If it is not clear Black can win...

This line shows that the Rg1 idea, good as it is, has the fault of leaving the White King vulnerable. Black needs to counter attack rather than retreat as some of the GMs have or were doing...
