 | | samvega: Went for the inferior 25. Nc6, which I'm going to pretend to myself is more aesthetic than the correct move. |
|
Mar-10-20 | | Granny O Doul: I think, aside from not winning a pawn and not wrecking Black's structure, that 25. Nc6 is less æsthetic than the other move, because Nxg6, if we ignore the fact that White threatens Qd4+, looks like a knight sacrifice while Nc6 does not. It is good enough to win, though. |
|
Mar-10-20 | | jith1207: Nc6 looks great, didn't even notice that even as I tried the feeble Nc3 before finding the solution. As for an argument on which move is aesthetic, please follow the proper <CG> guidelines on similar discussion found here: I A Horowitz vs NN, 1940 |

Mar-10-20 | | jith1207: So Nimzy lost the first round of the training match? How did all that work out for him? |

Mar-10-20 | | landshark: Did Nc6 too. |

Mar-10-20 | | agb2002: The black rooks are defenseless (that one on c5 is defended once but attacked once) and the white knight avoids the fork with check from d4. Therefore, 25.Nxg6: A) 25... fxg6 26.Qd4+ and 27.Qxc5 + - [R+P vs n]. B) 25... Nf6 26.Qxa8 + - [R+P vs n].
C) 25... Rxc1 26.Nxe7 Rxf1+ 27.Kxf1 + - [Q+P vs r] (27... Nxe7 28.Qxa8). D) 25... f5 26.Nxe7 fxe4 27.Rxc5 Nxe7 28.Re5, wins another pawn, + - [R+2P vs n]. |
|
Mar-10-20 | | Walter Glattke: Queen overloaded with guarding and self-defense, therefore 25.Nxg6 (gardez) fxg6 26.Qd4+ Kh7 27.Rxc5 R+P for N. 25.-Rxc1 26.Nxe7 Rxf1+ 27.Kxf1 Nxe7!? 28.Qxa8, 27.-Rd8 QP for R decisive material 25.-Nf6, not Nxe7 Nxe4 Rxc5 Nxc5 but 26.-Qxa8 threatens mate on h8. "Resign" with 25.-Qf6 26.Rxc5 Rd8 27.Nxe5 decisive material |

Mar-10-20 | | saturn2: I looked at
25. Nxg6 fxg6
(black queen moves yield pawn for nothing, counterattacking the white queen same) 26. Qd4+ Kf7 and the rook on c5 falls. |

Mar-10-20 | | BwanaVa: I went with 25. Nc6. So would Nimzo. ;-) |

 | | PawnSac: I looked at the puzzle on the front page and thought: Well lets see.. The only check available is Qxg6?? but that doesn't work. How bout Nxg6 ? Well what do ya know. It DOES works! LOL |

 | | PawnSac: < Granny O Doul: 25. Nc6 is less æsthetic ... It is good enough to win, though. > Ironically, I did not even consider Nc6 since i came at the puzzle from a different direction. Many people first count material. I don't. I usually look for all possible checks first. Maybe it was a fluke that i stumbled on the solution in like 5 seconds. After seeing that Nxg6 works, and that ..fxg6 is forced, there was no need to go further. Of course if i was in a real game, i probably would have spent a few seconds scanning other possibilities, but only a few. Now.. Had i not looked for checks first, and saw that Nc6 works, the next natural step is to check the mirror image move Nxg6! which is better for several obvious reasons. Either way, you get back to the better move Nxg6 IF you consider all possible checks, AND when it comes to knights, look at mirror image. Just a tip to remember. |

Mar-10-20 | | TheaN: Straightforward Tuesday, White threatens and executes the double attack 25.Nxg6 with both Nxe7 and Qd4+, and Black can't prevent both. Perhaps only the zwischenzug 25....Nf6 is worth a mention (missed it), but then Ra8 is hanging, 26.Qxa8 +-. After the prosaic 25....fxg6 26.Qd4+ +- White is winning, the rest is worse. |
|
Mar-10-20 | | TheaN: Actually, 25....Nf6 does prevent 26.Nxe7 Nxe4 ⩲ but not 26.Qd4 as Black will still lose a tempo preventing Nxe7. 26.Qxa8 is more direct but Qd4 is just as good. |
