Apr-25-21  fabelhaft: Monokroussos at TheChessMind has a very detailed analysis starting with 60. ... f6 instead and claims both that black was winning in the final position and that Wang Hao’s resignation was premature since it is after all easy to go wrong in such an endgame.

Richard Taylor: The final position was obviously lost.

The game wasn't that bad, a few misjudgements which are normal, often due to fatigue.

Richard Taylor: I didn't need to use a table base I never have. It is lost by inspection (some endings are not, some can be almost impossible to evaluate and it is no good using table bases, they might help in training but in certain positions only calculation will help), that is easy to see as the h pawn cannot be attacked, W is pawn down, there is a mate threat and / or a threat to win the h pawn. There is no point playing on such a position. I believe a little earlier there may have been a way to draw but that involved removing the Black pawn on h3.

I could win that as Black at the final position if I took over from Nepo and played Carlsen. And anyone who is an average fairly strong club player should be able to do that.

Apr-25-21  DouglasGomes: <WorstPlayerEver> Black improves with 60.. f6, disencouraging g5 from White if doesn't play it immediately.
Apr-25-21  DouglasGomes: 59. Nd6 seems to be enough to draw.
Apr-25-21  WorstPlayerEver: Yeah, I think 60. Re8 f6 is an improvement. But ChessMind gives 61. Re1 afaik.

61. Re2 seems better, but the pozich still is very tricky for White.

Apr-25-21  fabelhaft: Mamedyarov and Topalov resigned a few games in disgust that weren’t even lost, so this was far from one of the worse examples. Given how important the game was for other players it was still a bit disappointing to hear Wang Hao say that it probably was lost, that he maybe could have drawn it but didn’t want to try etc.
Apr-25-21  WorstPlayerEver: <fabelhaft: Mamedyarov and Topalov resigned a few games....>

During the Candidates?? That's the whole point here, I assume.

Apr-25-21  gary11201: Is this really a French Defense, Exchange variation, as the site characterizes it? Looks like a Petrov to me, but what do I know - if had rating, it would be no higher than 1600.
Apr-25-21  Petrosianic: <Messiah: An unusually bad game by Mr. Wang.>

If you're saying that he lost, I'd have to agree with you. If you're saying something more than that, could you say it a little more clearly?

Apr-25-21  gary11201: I meant to say: if I had a rating....
Apr-25-21  fabelhaft: It’s a Petrov after two moves and French Exchange after six.
Apr-25-21  WorstPlayerEver: <gary11201> The position after: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. d3 Nf6 6. d4 d5 is the same as after: 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 exd5 4. Nf3 Nf6

I don't have a rating either :P

Apr-25-21  Messiah: <Petrosianic: <Messiah: An unusually bad game by Mr. Wang.>

If you're saying that he lost, I'd have to agree with you. If you're saying something more than that, could you say it a little more clearly?>

The whole game, especially the bizarre opening, does not seem to be a product of a supergrandmaster.

Apr-25-21  WorstPlayerEver: <Messiah>

The only loss for White after 10. 0-0 in cg database (17 games) lol

Apr-25-21  WorstPlayerEver: PS afaiac Wang blew his cover when they stated: "I started playing as a 2200 player..." or something like that.

No one asked for an alibi, but still Wang was motivated to give one.. probably never watched Colombo 😂

Apr-25-21  WorstPlayerEver: PPPS

Why would it be specific a 2200 player? Why not a 2150.. or 2100 player? Whatever...

Nope; he stated: "2200 player.."

Now.... if that is not curious in your world.... what is????

Apr-25-21  WorstPlayerEver: Why would Wang suddenly start mocking 2200 players??? Huh? Why????

I resemble that remark!

Apr-25-21  WorstPlayerEver: <perfidious>

So and so it was the dumbest thing Wang ever said. Now he has to live with it.

FSR: <gary11201> You're right that the game began as a Petrov. However, the players soon reached a position that often arises from the Exchange French after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.Bd3 Bd6 etc. Opening Explorer As such, it's reasonable to characterize the opening as an Exchange French.

ajk68: Did Wang Hao flag? Or did he just give up?

The position favors black, but there is probably a some drawing possibilities out there.

You are right. There still are some drawing chances. At least he could have tried. But he told he got fed up with the position. And now,a few days later,we know he has retired from professionel chess as a player.
