Sir Richard Whieldon Barnett was champion of Ireland from 1886 to 1889. He attended Oxford from approximately 1883-89, where he was president of the Oxford University Chess Club, competing in a number of varsity matches against Cambridge. He competed in shooting at the 1908 Summer Olympics. He was a member of the British House of Commons from 1916 to 1929, and was president of the House of Commons Chess Circle from 1923 to 1929.

  GrahamClayton: Richard Wheildon Barnett is one of the lesser known sporting all-rounders. As well as being Irish chmapion from 1886 to 1889, he also competed in the 1908 Olympics as a shooter.
