British publisher and editor and a founding figure in popular journalism. Newnes also served as a Liberal Party Member of Parliament for two decades. His company, George Newnes Ltd, was known for such periodicals as Tit-Bits and The Strand Magazine; it continued publishing ground-breaking consumer magazines such as Nova long after his death.

Jan-30-16  zanzibar: <SIR GEORGE NEWNES is an ardent and enthusiastic chess player, and along with his amiable and accomplished wife, has rendered yeomen service to the game, which in days of old was supported by Kings and Queens, in their own right. Nowadays the Knights bear away the palm in this respect, and what life and vitality there is in the British chess world of to-day is due to the untiring efforts of such men as Sir George Newnes, Messrs. Leopold Hofier and E. N. Franken stein, in each case love of the game for its own sake being the leading motif.

Of the many public evidences of Sir George Newnes' princely generosity, we need cite but one instance, and bearing, as it docs, the impress of International amity and good-will, should do much towards restoring the cordial relations which once, and we believe happily still exist, between the two great English-speaking nations. Towards the close of last season it was proposed to test the relative strengths of the English and American native-born players by match per cable telegraph. The match duly came off. and Sir George not only paid all the expenses of the English team, but gave trophy, value one thousand dollars, for the winners. How the Yankees whipped the Britishers is now matter of history, but it is hoped the return match will see the mother country to the fore.>
