waustad: One thing to realize when looking into biographical information is that Hans the chess player is the son of the aeronautical engineer and that both have the same name. Some sources seem to mix them up. The Hans who visited my house during a chess tournament in Athens, OH many years ago was born well after WWII.

waustad: His peak rating was higher than that, 2336 in 2000, and he is still somewhat active.
