BishopBerkeley: Powerful short video of high-voltage electrical arc: the Jacob's Ladder Effect.

I don't know if B. Watt was related to James Watt at all ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_... ), but since he's gotten no attention at all, this seems to be the best place to post a link to a powerful short video which shows a (presumably controlled) electrical arcing incident at a high voltage power breaker. It's well worth seeing*, quite an impressive effect:

A bit more on the Jacob's Ladder Effect, though from the perspective of the "dual rod" ladders one is likely to see in the movies:

http://repairfaq.ece.drexel.edu/sam...

The notion of "Jacob's Ladder" comes from the Bible (from the Torah, in this case, specifically from Genesis 28:12):

"And [Jacob] dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of G-d ascending and descending on it."

[KJV translation]

All rather interesting!

(: ♗B :)

I'm quite happy not to be on the path of least resistence of this awesome arc! I'm also glad that's true of the two guys in the foreground!

*a note on viewing the small video file: the file is an MPEG file (*.mpg), and should play on any standard multimedia player. When you click the link above, simply choose "open it with the default application" from the box that appears. The download will then begin, taking anywhere from seconds to a few minutes, depending on how long it takes to download a 1.6 MB file. Once the download is complete, you should be able to see the video. If you do not have a multimedia player installed on your system, may I (enthusiatically) recommend the free version of the Winamp player:

Feb-05-09  Augalv: A game between Volt and B Watt would be electrifying.
Feb-05-09  Jim Bartle: It would depend on the level of resistance.
