Benzol: <GrahamClayton> Yes it is. I play in two tournaments as a schoolboy that Robert also played in although we didn't meet over the board. I only recently learnt that he had become politicly active but I know it's the same person.

'thank you very, very much'

N.Z.C.A. Bulletin No.3 1974

It's Robert C. Wansink thanking Ian Rex Mitchell (right one?) for collecting the necessary travel funds for the two NZ qualifiers to participate in the 1974 Australian Junior Championships where he finished 5th. His good friend at the time Leith Palmer - as GrahamClayton pointed out on the player's page, became 10th in the same tourney.

Richard Taylor might have some infos on 'Ian Mitchell'.

Sep-21-20  Cheshire Matt: Robert and his elder sister Michele stayed with my family once. They had come down from Whangarei to Auckland to play tournament chess ('73-'74). Robert was extremely strong over the board when only just a teenager, and Michele was just extremely nice. I also remember a sense of the comic.

One memory is standing with Michele watching her brother play on one of the top boards at a weekend Swiss at the ACC. Robert was in deep contemplation, his hands tangled in the fringe of his hair, as his hairstyle started to lean towards the extreme, his sister started to giggle quietly. There's nothing like a good giggle.
