JOHN MONTGOMERIE
(born Sep-04-1911, died Jul-21-1995, 83 years old) United Kingdom

[what is this?]

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 4 September, 1911. Educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh, and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1935. He came back to Scotland to take part in the 1937 Scottish championship, held early in the year, where he took second place behind Fairhurst. Played for Scotland at the Stockholm Olympiad 1937, the only occasion when he represented the country in over-the-board play. Mongomerie’s career in law kept him busy, but he retained his interest in all aspects of the game, particularly as a composer of chess problems. He wrote 'The Quiet Game' (Davis-Poynter, London 1972). All royalties from sales of the book were to be given to the Friends of Chess. He died 21 July, 1995.

Aug-08-12  qqdos: <GC> Many thanks for that! As you will see all the games quoted come from the 1937 Olympiad, where JM was playing on second board for Scotland. When the Scots met Holland, both top boards were rested and JM was promoted. He was delighted and charmed to receive a pre-game visit from Max Euwe, then still World Champion, to assure him that absolutely no disrespect was meant by Max taking the afternoon off! If only they still behaved like that.

May-11-20  Cibator: I'd like to see the encounter referred to in his biographical note on the end-flap of "The Quiet Game"; the one where he allowed his opponent an extra queen, and still won. But I guess the score disappeared decades ago.
