perfidious: If the above statement regarding yourself is true, you've plenty of company.
Jul-13-13  Fiona Macleod: The dictionary says "angst" is a German word which means "dread" and became sort of watered down when it was adopted into the English language as it came to mean just "anxiety" or "a feeling of guilt or remorse."

I had always assumed it has the same etymology as "anguish." Well, it turns out "anguish" has completely different origins: Latin ("angustia"- tightness; "angustus" - narrow) and Old French ("anguisse" - choking).

maxi: <Fiona Macleod> It would be unlikely that two so similar-sounding words like "angst" and "angustia" with such closely related meanings would have different etymologies. In this case there is a common origin in the Indoeuropean "angh" (narrow, choking).
