Maaja Ranniku was born on the 1st of March 1941 in the USSR. Awarded the WIM title in 1964 she was USSR Women's Champion in 1963 and 1967. She became Estonian Women's Champion ten times (1961, 1963, 1967, 1973, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1987, 1988 and 1991). She played at the Sukhumi (women's) 1964 Candidates tournament, finishing with 10.5/18.

May-31-06  stanleys: Do you know something more about this Estonian woman?As I see she was many times URRS champion or medalist,but she never played the Olympics,neither Interzonal tournament.And she hasn't never been awarded a GM title

Mar-01-09  brankat: The selection of Mrs.Ranniku's games in this database really doesn't do her any justice: +0 -10 =3.

Yet, somehow she managed to be the USSR Women's Champion 3 times. Not an easy feat for any player! Plus, ten times the Champion of Estonia over a period of 30 years!

R.I.P. Maaja Ranniku.
