Brazil national <Hozzinho>

Yes <Ajax ahoy> they are full credit there. Until they sell every one of those players off for peanuts 1 second after they win the OOFA CHAMPIONS.

This has to have <Cruyff> spinning in his grave. Total lack of respect for the glorious history of Dutch football.

That said, although watching the first leg was like dying a slow death, <Spurs> showed a lot of guts and all they have to do is keep a clean sheet and score one (1) goal in HOLLANDVILLE and it's anyone's tie.

<Spurs> are unpredictable. Sometimes they play better with a skeleton crew, though it doesn't seem to be helping them these days.

I was cheering for <Barca> solely because I think <Spurs> would have a better chance of winning against them than against <Liverpool>.

To be honest the most exciting drama right now is in GERMANY where <Schalke> just dumped <Dortmund> in the DARBY after the ref sent off two (2) members of the Dortmund squad, including <Marco Ruess>. lolol now they are in a LIFE AND DEATH STRUGGLE for the title with <Bayern> with only three matches to play...

I ordered THE FORCE IS WITH YOU because I don't remember watching it before- It should come in a few days and I will report back on that movie.

<Hozza> That Vlogger is truly excellent- he really knows his footy, not to mention melees. I thought the "DVD store" sequence was particularly brilliant:

- What matches we have seen would you like to see on DVD?

- "I wouldn't want to watch any of them again..." LOL

I'm voting this "Best footy video in history": https://youtu.be/WURgG8Rixkc

<Delicatessen Ali> came out of MK Dons, if I remember correctly? I wonder how many melees he participated in...

<Hoozinho> I would love to watch <Derby v Leeds> but I don't have access to the first division matches.

I have "a website" that gives me access to the top league matches, although I have to wait a day or two after they are played.

I can only watch <Derby> on highlight replays on youtube.

But you are still alive for promotion right?

UP, DERBY

####################

I grieve daily for Spurs... When the match highlights include the gentlest player in the league attacking another player you know the side is *really* struggling.

You know I have no proof or reason to believe this, but that <Son Heung-min> video reminded me of a scene from the movie MASH.

I think it is possible that the guy baited <Son> by calling him some kind of derogatory name under his breath. That used to be the oldest trick in sports baiting.

Anyways I can't accuse anyone of anything. I just find it suspicious that <Son> lost it like that, when he has never done anything remotely similar in his whole career...

<Hostič> (Slovakian international)

Well it appears you were right when you said Blighty invented everything.

A Blighty vs Blighty OOFA final means that Blighty invented OOFA, if I have my maths straight.

I was thrilled by <yet another world historical comeback from a multiple goal deficit> from Reds, who seem to specialize in pulling rabbits out of a hat.

All credit to <Klop>, smashing the Spanish navy without service of his two best strikers. This is the best result since the Battle of Trafalgar. What a manager. Whatever else happens, he surely must be a strong candidate for "Gaffer of the Year."

All credit to <Lucas has Ajax in Mourning> as well. What a performance. I almost died around 20 times watching that match- it was the hardest "entertainment" I ever watched in my life. I laughed, I cried, I had several heart attacks, I threw chess books against the walls, I almost threw my computer out the window. All credit to the weeping <Pocket Chess>, who proudly proclaimed the promotion of his squad from "Heros" to "Superheros."

To be fair, The Reds' achievement was even more superheroic. Barca didn't lay down for anyone, and you could easily see the difference in quality between Barca and Ajax brand cleansing products. My only disappointment about Barca was that Suarez didn't actually bite a third (3rd) player, though he did add to his tally of spiking a few people.

I take nothing away from Ajax, who will be criminally gutted in summer- maybe Spurs could pick up a few of these young stars oh wait Spurs never buy anyone... except they bought <Lucas Mourning Glory> at least. Smartest move in years and I said so at the time.

This was titanic play by the Reds against a legendary team. Barca played with a considerable amount of venom. Missing a bit of finish perhaps but they could easily have potted a goal or three. <Allison Wonderland> was super sharp in goal, and he needed to be.

INGERLAND dominates the European elite but Notts County , the world's OLDEST FOOTBALL CLUB ,have just been relegated into the National League (non league) . In essence theyve lost their status .

Very sad football wise.

English football is alive and kickin if you've a foreign sugar daddy who's alive and kickin.

Wolves are getting loads of back slappin for their season in the prem but they've been pumped silly with foreign investment and dosh .. lol lol .. and by passed FFP in the championship.

<Hozza> - sobering words, and I believe you know exactly what you are talking about.

Now I understand better a comment you made a few weeks ago, making fun of <Wolves> in the Kibbutzer Kafe.

This reminds me of back in the day when I was curious about why you denigrated <Lestuh>, and you told me some of the sorry back story behind that as well.

At least we can still watch the England national side without having to worry about these sordid money details.

Even whilst watching <Spurs-Ajax>, one of the greatest games of footy I ever saw, my enjoyment was dampened by <Steve McManoman> noting how many of the "Ajax" side were already bought and sold for next year.

Gutting the club for next season, just like they always did with <Southhampton>.

Clubs like Spurs who can keep together for 4-5 years and actually build a real team- this is a privilege for big money clubs only.

And you can't blame the players- they just want to compete at the highest level possible. It's not just about the money with the players, though that's a big part of it of course.

They all want to win a UEFA championship, or a league championship.

So how can you blame them for leaving their parent clubs?

I can't fault <Gareth Bale> for leaving Spurs. But I can tell you I liked seeing him play for Wales more than for Real. And I watched a large number of Real Madrid matches solely because I love to watch <Bale>. I just love him, one of my favorite players all time.

<Kenyan midfielder "Hozzyama">

Did you know that Spurs' <Victor Waynama> is the only Kenyan currently in the premier league? I learned that whilst watching the last game of the season, in which Spurs slept-walked their way into 4th place.

I'm sorry to hear of <County's> woes- supporting a club is a nightmare most of the time. The "big money foreign money" issues make it a thousand times worse.

<Pocket Chess's> recent bizarre comments to the press are a case in point- reading between the lines, I think he is trying to publicly accuse <Mr. Levy> of refusing to buy any more players. 18 months without a signing is ridiculous. How can <Pocket Chess> take Spurs to the next level without new signings?

Even 10th division clubs such as <The St. Swithens' School for Girls Footy Club> make new signings every year.

<Pocket Chess> has alerted the press that he has had enough and who can blame him.

On more optimistic news, though- is it certain <Derby> is out? Do you still have a chance for promotion or is it mathematically out?

Spurs could still become European champions, but I fear they have a slim chance to beat <Liverpool>.

The way Spurs "played" their last game, and the recent bizarre and cryptic comments <Pocket Chess> has made to the press...

Tough to win a big game with such weird crap going on.

On other optimistic news, you seem to have an endless knowledge of excellent footy vloggers- this <Villa Chap> is superb, thank you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71-...

As a chess fan with certain tastes, you might like to check out …

https://dgriffinchess.wordpress.com...

… if you haven’t done so already.

I have to appreciate this guy’s commitment to translating new material and then sharing it!

Blimey, what a colossal week that was for English footy. Heroic performances by Tottenham and Liverpool for sure. It’s going to be an epic ECL Final and I really think it could go either way. I mean Liverpool will start favourites, but could feel nervous about finishing such a bright season on a low, and play too cautiously. Who knows? Spurs will be up for it.

I also enjoyed the finale to the Match Of The Day season, although I confess I fell asleep during Burnley-Arsenal. Okay, it was a long show.

Yeah, I get what you say about Spurs not making any recent signings. There can be benefits in keeping a ‘tight’ squad, with very little disruption, but it wouldn’t hurt to always chop your worst player and bring in one excellent replacement. Who would you axe first? Sissoko has plenty of work ethic but rarely contributes goals or assists. I found him frustrating to watch at Newcastle. What do you reckon?

Speaking of ‘tight’ things …

<Tight package motorcycle girl> I guess you finished watching this by now. Was the ending a shock, or did you see it coming?

<Tabula Rasa> I hope you tracked this one down. Indisputable proof that ‘Belgian’ is not just a type of chocolate.

<A Bout de Souffle> Harking back a few years … this was your recommendation after hearing us (I can’t recall who exactly) chatter on about the 1983 film <Breathless> and the hitherto elusive <Valerie Kaprisky>. Well, I ended up getting a pretty ropy copy, but it was a remarkably good film nonetheless. Belmondo and Jean Seberg were a class act, while Godard’s treatment was both stylish and brooding – something the French do rather well. So, if you have any other hidden gems you want to share …

<The Paint with the Dragon Tattoo>

I changed my tune on <Sissoko>- his new vigor this year actually led indirectly to more goals and assists from other players. I would keep him.

Yes it's the best possible result- now Premier League clubs are guaranteed to win both OOFA PRIME and OOFA MINOR titles. I will cheer for Spurs (prime) and Gunners (minor), though my supporting any side is generally the kiss of death.

Case in point- secretly I thought it was my fault that Welsh footy got flushed down the <Junior Hoilett>. He's actually a fine player, too good to get relegated.

I supported <Swansea> but despite the heroics of <Victor Hugo Llorente> they went down the following season. I was sad to see <Cardiff> go down not the least because I really like <Neil Warnock>. All this when <Whales> showed so well at the last European Chumps tournament.

I didn't finish watching <13 Belgian Ghosts> yet, but I'm terrified of spoilers so don't give me any hints! I have only had time to watch a couple of movies these past weeks, mainly because any viewing time I had has been sucked up by watching footy. I saw a lot of grand matches this season, not the least being <Schalke> knocking off <Dortmund> in their DARBY. Even at the moment two <Dortmund> players were sent off in quick succession, including <Marco Reus> lolol <Schalke> was already looking like putting up a fight. <Schalke> in fact won their last two DARBIES against <Dortmund>.

If you liked <A Bout of the Sniffles>, you may well enjoy some of the other black and white films I watch over and over through the years.

1.Nosferatu (1923), one of the few "silents" that plays as good as a "talkie" for me.

2.Carnival of Souls (1962) not to be missed. For me, the best horror film ever made.

3.And most of all, above all others for me, Fritz Lang's M (1931). This is the most frightening film I've ever seen, and I am a horror addict. Peter Lorre's immortal.

May-15-19  Paint My Dragon: <Fissure Queen> Yes, it was sad to see Cardiff go down, but at least the ever generous ManU gave them an end of season treat. <Neil Warhorse> will bounce back - he always manages to land on his feet.

Big period of rebuilding ahead for Ole. In his own words, qualifying for the Europa League was really our level this season. I'd also say it could have been a lot worse.

I had no idea you were watching Bundesliga as well. That’s real dedication. I had a brief fascination with the Italian Serie A in the early 90s and once, on a skiing holiday in Livigno, decided I would pass on my knowledge to the locals in a bar. All I got back were blank faces; they found their own footy too boring and only watched the English game!

Thanks for the film tips – I have seen a more recent Nosferatu, but it wasn’t that memorable, as is often the case. Not seen the other two either, although I was lucky enough in my teenage years to catch a special screening of Metropolis at our local cinema. Even now, when I close my eyes, I can still see Lang’s vast, futuristic landscapes – the elevated walkways and weird machinery with giant clock faces. How the heck did he do all that in the 1920s? It’s hard enough just dreaming it all up, never mind filming it.

Anyway, they all look interesting, so I’ll check them out.

  jessicafischerqueen:

Well hats off to <Ole Siggurdsen>, darkly (and wrongly) accused (by me only) of being <Boris Gelfand Siggurdson's> father.

He has proven a better fit for <MANC> than the long suffering, and long causing others to be suffering, <Jose Feliciano>.

The "flowering" of <Paul Pogba> has been really seen for the first time only under <Ole! Ole!'s> watch.

Only now does <Paul> pay more attention to training than he does to which new color he will plant on some weird area of his haircut.

<Serious A> is a serious league, I'm told. I confess to watching a few matches just to see <Ronaldo>. I love watching him play.

I always liked the <Bundesschachspiel>. It's been a breeding ground for many future <Swift Premium Ham> stars such as <Sunny> who has proven Spurs' best player this season for my money.

You won't go wrong with watching <Nosferatu> or <M>, believe me.

<Carnival of Souls> is an American film that was produced on around three fiddy, but unaccountably has become a classic that is often touted by horror cranks such as myself

May-15-19  Paint My Dragon: Yeah ... <Poggers> certainly kept up the good play during Ole's induction period. I guess it was partly a slap in the face for Jose, who he fell out with, i.e. he could make Jose look bad by making Ole look good. Sadly, the effort wasn't maintained once the new manager was appointed. Not all Poggers' fault of course ... there are others who look guilty of not caring and not trying. Ultimately, the mix is wrong though - there's no strong leader and too many talented but inconsistent players, like Pogba, Martial, Sanchez, Rashford and Lingard. I'd sack most of them and buy <Josh King>, to borrow a line from Tab's page!

<Son> has been magnificent for Spurs this season. Dead right. It seemed like he doubled his already good efforts when Kane got injured. A real team player.

What is your view of <Eraserhead> incidentally? That has to be the most scary and depressing film I ever watched, although I've not seen that much horror. The immense sense of relief, leaving the cinema and realizing that I wasn't trapped in his life and could return to normality. Maybe I got a bit too 'involved'?

May-15-19
Premium Chessgames Member
  jessicafischerqueen:

No you didn't. You got it exactly right. <Eraserhead> is in many respects <David Lynch Mob's> best film, in its power and conciseness. It haunted me as well, to this day, and I revisit it regularly, since I like feeling haunted. Hence the addiction to horror movies.

"The Girl in the Radiator" was the most terrifying sequence for me, by far.

Finally, <Eraserhead> had a good haircut. You can't go wrong with getting such details right.

<Josh King> has so much upside it's a wonder he is not training to be a balloon pilot.

<Progger> is more likely than not to find the perfect place for a popular 80s video game. He's too talented to fail.

Do you ever miss the footy of <Trevor Francis>, <Kenny Dalgleish> and <Kevin Keegan>?

Why don't they appear on people's top ten or even top 20s lists. They dominated the top league. <Liverpool> were GHODS in those days. Actually they had more than a few "eras," similar to <Terry Gorilla's> intriguing mystery film <Twelve MANCkies>. Good movie that, 8/10 on IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt011474...

Only crabby people or City fans dislike MANC. Sir Alex made them the most lovable team in sporting history, and he still attends every game. What a mensch, eh?

Also who knew <Gary Neville> would go from strength to strength, becoming the world's most crabby- and wonderful- footy presenter.

GOD BLESS Sky Sports for giving him his new home.

I have to say that BT Sports is also excellent with their 1st string team of <"Fletch"> and <Steve Macmahonahaomoanan>. Did you notice that Steve never once says anything without saying "Fletch" first? Fun fact: Fletch has never once said Steve's name on air.

I'm sure you've seen <The Class of 92>- I have seen it many times. The ultimate modern era footy documentary for me. Warning! You need to read the IMDB page carefully, in order to avoid accidentally seeing the softcore parody <The Ass of 92>.

You'll thank me later: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt331138...

May-16-19  Paint My Dragon: <Twelve Monkeys> was indeed a good film, not least because Gilliam told Willis to lose his trademark smirk and kept pulling him up on it whenever it crept back in. I think it worked.

<Twelve Manckies> though … is a nice twist. Who are the 12 greatest Mancs of all time? After much thought, I decided on Sir Geoff Hurst, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Prof Brian Cox, JH Blackburne, Suranne Jones, Emmeline Pankhurst, Steve Coogan, Nigel Short, Ian Curtis, Nobby Stiles and Morrissey. Of course there were many other contenders, like Johnny Marr, Bernard Sumner, Ian McShane, Robert Donat, Davy Jones, Mike Atherton, Caroline Aherne, Sir Norman Foster, Anthony Burgess, Gary Neville etc., but unfortunately, 12 is a small number. I’ll have to wait for Gilliam to produce the sequel, <Seven Hundred and Thirty-eight Manckies>.

Yes, I love all of the footy films and documentaries, but the one I keep going back to is <Alfie’s Boys> – the story of the 1966 WC win. There are some surprising moments where team members spill the beans on the true Alf Ramsay. On camera, he was a stiff, polished, public school accented, figurehead. But behind the scenes, quite the opposite - a broad Essex geezer, who swore all the time and just wanted to be one of the lads.

Francis, Dalglish, Keegan etc. Yep, they were all terrific to watch. Almost as good as Charlton, Law, Best etc. Lol.

<Eraserhead> is a film I regularly advise any ‘friend in crisis’ to watch. If only for the 'lift' they will experience when they stop watching it. Ugh, that clanking radiator sound. Kill me now.
