  MissScarlett: Were we not promised dedicated new staff members to attend to such matters? The reality of the new administration has been consistently underwhelming.

Absentee landlord?

If only Daniel had implemented the sandbox idea...

It's certainly not an easy task keeping the database consistent when uploading. In fact, it's quite difficult, in general.

But especially here on <CG>, with some of its quirky, if not even counter-productive, conventions.

What, no roses or chocolates from Hazz?!

How disappointing.

  Tabanus: Bareev vs Ehlvest, 2001 was dated Jan 02 earlier today. I posted that it was played "some time in December" (knowing there are many other wrong dates). Then <whiteshark> posted that it was played on Dec 3. Now looking at the date it is (right now) Nov 3 which someone must have changet it to.

I tried to change the date to Dec 3 but got this message: <ERROR: Please make the event information more compact.>. Then when trying to remove 2001/02 from Event I got this: <ERROR - AS OF DEC-28-17 YOU CANNOT EDIT THE NAME OF TOURNAMENT INDEX EVENT>. So I'm stuck there, and perhaps everywhere in CG.

  MissScarlett: If we thought we had it bad:

<When the 30-year-old founder of a Canadian cryptocurrency exchange died suddenly, he took the whereabouts of some C$180m ($135m; £105m) in cryptocurrency to his grave. Now, tens of thousands of Quadriga CX users are wondering if they will ever see their funds again.>

Feb-17-19  zanzibar: Well, it feels more and more to me like my contributions to the Bistro are close to over.

Of course, my posts of late have been of a different nature than from a few years ago. At the time I really thought <CG> was amendable to new ideas. I know few biographers shared my technical interests, important or unimportant though they might be, but I did appreciate the support on my researches, and the few cases of fellow users, like <crawfb5>, who actually were willing to try some of the new ideas prototype implementations.

The long posts I wrote in reply to <Tab>, (endlessly!) outlining much of my ideas, originally had the hope of winning converts. But please don't think me naive, I soon knew <Tab> was firmly obdurate in his opposition - but I always hoped that there was an audience of at least one who I could ultimately win over - i.e. Daniel.

That's why I posted so much in detail - in the hope that someone experienced in actually implementing and managing such a large database, and who could truly appreciate the issues, would one day come to also appreciate the proposed solutions.

Let's face the facts - doing everything by hand doesn't cut it, and I exposed numerous examples of <CG> failures in this regard.

Daniel appreciated this as well, and the one time I actually used the email channel was in a shared attempt to implement bulk submissions for <CG>, in particular, Altona (1872). Unfortunately, after the inevitable first glitch Daniel lost interest. Though disappointed, I always hoped Daniel would take it up again.

Sadly, fate determined otherwise.

Still, I had some measure of hope, and did leave <Sargon> two important posts to try to orient him during the "troubles". But, at the time, he was MIA and/or otherwise occupied with learning how to run the site. I always intended to write a third post, one which might now get accepted given that <Switch> is now gone, but I never did.

Why should I really bother? <Sargon>'s management style is quite different from Daniel's.

Cleaning up my blog, I saw how that a tremendous amount of time and energy was spent writing software tools for <CG>, four years ago. In hindsight, this was a mistake, as <CG> is actually the most difficult case to work with.

Live and learn.

  Tabanus: Bareev vs Ehlvest, 2001 : the date is now Dec 03.

<Miss> and other editors: are you able to edit date on this game? I want to know whether CG is muzzling me only.

  Tabanus: <Stonehenge> Thanks. So not me only.

Btw, I wonder what happened to chesshistoryinterest, jess and hemy? Did they just leave, or are they prevented from making work for Annie on Sundays.

I've promoted about 104 hand-made events for TI. What's wrong with them?

No.

  Tabanus: Mmm... perhaps just something rotten with the Event name ;)

I think "2001/02" should not be included in Event? I checked a few and unlike before it seems 19xx/xx+1 is now part of the event name.

Feb-18-19

  Tabanus: Hmm. But on e. g. Huebner vs Korchnoi, 1980 and some other new year event games I'm indeed able to edit the date.

And "1980/81" is included in the event name there.

  MissScarlett: But the event field for Huebner vs Korchnoi, 1980 doesn't require compaction. It just seems to be a programming quirk.

  Tabanus: Perhaps there's just something special with FIDE World Championship Knockout Tournament (2001/02). I do wonder why so many games are dated to January - whether that happened lately or it's always been like that, since 2001. I suspect the latter, but who knows.

  Tabanus: <But the event field for Huebner vs Korchnoi, 1980 doesn't require compaction.> These are the longest I can find:

Polugaevsky - Mecking Candidates Quarterfinal (1977)
FIDE World Championship Knockout Tournament (2001/02)

The WC tournament is >50 characters uh because "2002/02" is incorporated in the title? CG: perhaps set the limit to 60, or face correction slips. But this is only one of the many wrecked events in the disaster area 2001 to about 2013.

  Tabanus: Kasparov - Kramnik Classical World Championship Match (2000) is too long also. There may be a few others.

<Annie> Blitz WC? I have some Corus waiting for you.

  Annie K.: Umm... I'll take Corus. ;D

  Tabanus: <Annie> Splendid. I'm in fact planning to make a Corus effort, i. e. to add some more events, and add xtabs + right dates etc. to existing ones.

Umm, I'm thinking it's better say "by winning Corus Group B, he qualified for participation in Corus <Group A> the next year." Not just "Corus" next year or "Tata Steel" next year, but "Tata Steel Masters" as Sargon has it for 2019. Here's my suggestion:

Hoogovens (1996) --> Hoogovens Group A
Hoogovens (1997) --> Hoogovens Group A
Hoogovens (1998) --> Hoogovens Group A
Corus (2000) --> Corus Group A
Corus (2004) --> Corus Group A
Corus (2005) --> Corus Group A
Corus (2006) --> Corus Group A
Corus (2007) --> Corus Group A
Corus (2008) --> Gorus Group A
Corus (2009) --> Corus Group A
Corus (2010) --> Corus Group A
Tata Steel (2011) --> Tata Steel Group A
Tata Steel (2012) --> Tata Steel Group A
Tata Steel (2013) --> Tata Steel Group A
Tata Steel (2014) --> Tata Steel Masters
Tata Steel (2015) --> Tata Steel Masters
Tata Steel (2016) --> Tata Steel Masters
Tata Steel (2017) --> Tata Steel Masters
Tata Steel (2018) --> Tata Steel Masters

I'm not sure yet about the earlier Hoogovens. For the later years' "Chess on Tour" venues (outside of Wijk), I'll go through them afterwards - they are probably not right anyway.

  Stonehenge: Ahem, the meek and humble also want their correction slips and game uploads to be processed ASAP.

Daniel didn't give a rat's ass about how the game database looked like, let's hope it will be better from now on.

  Annie K.: <Tab> ok, I agree with all that - Corus events done.

<Stonehenge> I've been processing a lot of your slips too, actually... mostly on player names. Thanks for the good work! :D

<MissS> I'd love to give you preferential treatment too, but many of your submissions tend to be less clear-cut than the ones I'm fast-tracking. Anything that requires checking up on (conjectures, drawing attention to corrections by other users, etc.) gets relegated to the second round of slip processions, because I'd rather implement the simple and uncontroversial corrections first. I did process quite a few of your simpler ones. :)

The game uploads have run into a little holdup in that the game viewer on the submissions page isn't working well yet. I can process them anyway, but I have to use some independent viewer to check them, which is inconvenient so I'd rather wait until Sargon works out the viewer's problem, given that I have the slips to do as well anyway.

But to help y'all feel better, I'm willing to take a few special requests to process uploads you feel particularly strongly about. ;)

No need to resubmit, just let me know which games to look for.

  MissScarlett: I wish I knew. I don't keep detailed records. I have a memory I once told Daniel he should give notice when he uploaded submitted games; needless to say, he didn't take a blind bit of notice.

What I'd like to see - short of a whole new system for submissions - is that any uploads or corrections you enact should be recorded in the Editor Notes: Editor Notes which, at present, serves little purpose beyond documenting Stonehenge's autistic proclivities.

  Annie K.: The editor notes seem to be at least partly automatic, and document editor interface actions, not the admin interface changes I'm mostly working with now. I usually use them manually only to log notes of sources for the corrections as given by slip submitters. It would unfortunately simply add too much work to document every single action manually. But yeah, maybe I can ask Sargon to take the time at some point to add the admin-level actions to the automatic records.

I'll try to at least stop by and mention when I process a large number of slips by a particular submitter. I'm making editor submissions the highest priority in any case. :)
