 | | kwgurge: <Let's deviate from theory early this time.> I disagree with this. Previous experience in the GMAN and GMYS games has shown that we have been successful: 1) playing a solid, time-tested opening (meaning we can't get ambushed in the first ten moves or so); 2) picking a line with a history of being played in the past by the world's strongest players (so we know that the best chess minds have found it worth playing - and presumably with white - expected to yield good winning chances); 3) and then having the guts, computer assisted insight, and luck to find a novelty or rarity to venture off into uncharted waters with somewhere in the move 12 to 18 range. |

Jul-02-07 | | rayyan: gert jan Timmerman, fide rating 2273? |

 | | kwgurge: BTW, 1.e4 - simply the best. |
Jul-02-07 | | Eurotrash: After 1.d4 it seems likely we will meet a king's indian. And I just love tearing down any fianchetto defence =). |
Jul-02-07 | | benjinathan: I will happily perform any menial task as in the GMYS game. My current thinking is to do some statistical analysis. Good luck everyone. |
Jul-02-07 | | granyid: <rayyan>If GMT rating is 2273 can he beat The World Team? We need here at least 2800 right? He was wrong to sign up...or maybe he had the latest gun..more than our Rybka and Fritz.. 1.e4 for the pollster. |
Jul-02-07 | | imag: I'm pretty sure that after 1.d4 we will end up playing KID and after 1.e4 we will play Ruy Lopez. So basically the question is which
opening gives us better winning chances. IMHO, we should rather play KID because GMT plays Ruy Lopez very well. I vote 1.d4 but if the Team decides to play King's Bishop Gambit instead of Ruy Lopez, I'll switch to 1.e4 |
Jul-02-07 | | gmgomes: Let´s go for 1. Nf3; keeps lots of choices, including a Sicilian in case of 1.... c5. |
Jul-02-07 | | Karpova: <rayyan: gert jan Timmerman, fide rating 2273?>
<granyid: <rayyan>If GMT rating is 2273 can he beat The World Team? We need here at least 2800 right? He was wrong to sign up...or maybe he had the latest gun..more than our Rybka and Fritz..> Gert Jan Timmerman is the current Nr.7 in the world according to the rating list with a rating of 2700 (best so far was 2735).
Check out:
http://www.iccf.com/content/index.p... Sure, this is ICCf rating (for correspondence chess) and that's what counts since we are playing correspondence chess. Judging him by his FIDE rating would be a severe mistake as it says nothing about his strength. This guy has been CC Worldchampion so there shouldn't be any doubt that he's "worth" playing the World (the question is rather if we prove worth playing him). |
Jul-02-07 | | whatthefat: One thing we need to take care with in treating Greenwich's opening statistics, is which of his games were played correspondence rather than OTB. |
Jul-02-07 | | djmercury: <I'm pretty sure that after 1.d4 we will end up playing KID and after 1.e4 we will play Ruy Lopez.> Completely agree and probably not the most exciting variations of the Ruy Lopez, like the Anti-Marshall systems or a Berlin. |
Jul-02-07 | | whatthefat: In support of 1.d4, might I say these statistics are somewhat frightening: Repertoire Explorer: Gert Jan Timmerman (black) |
Jul-02-07 | | sanyas: After 1.e4 if we get a Petroff, it won't be trivial for Black to make a draw, will it? Kramnik makes it look so easy. But this is correspondence. Still, I was hoping that, since in our first game 1.e4 was played, and in our second one 1.d4, we could try 1.♘f3 this time? |
Jul-02-07 | | sanyas: But he plays 2...♘c6, so it doesn't matter. Unless he plays a Berlin Wall. |
Jul-02-07 | | GoldenKnight: Since so many people have started signing up, I am reposting this from the GMYS site: <<All> Since we have open voting in the GJT game, we don't need a pollster to collect numbers, but what does everyone think about keeping a pollster to make note of the names of who is voting for what? For those who follow every day, it makes no difference, but there are those who only look once in a while and may want to know how the leaders, the most "influential" people are voting.> |
Jul-02-07 | | Bridgeburner: <rayyan>, <granyid> GMT's the 15th World Correspondence Chess Champion. 2278 is his OTB rating. He will probably be as or more competitive than Arno Nickel or Yuri Shulman and probably the toughest opponent we could find apart from the current World Correspondence Chess Champion, 69 year old Joop Van Oosterom who's OTB rating is even lower at 2260. The previous WCCC (between 2004 and 2007 (a few days ago)) is Christophe Leotard and doesn't even seem to have an OTB rating! Just for interest, these players March 2007 ratings and rankings in the ICCF are: Gert Timmerman 2700 (ranked 7th)
Joop van Oosterum 2770 (ranked 1st)
Christophe Léotard 2675 (ranked 14th)
Arno Nickel 2606 (ranked 68th) |

Jul-02-07 | | zanshin: <granyid> No need to announce your votes to the pollster here because voting is open. You can see the vote totals live. <benjinathan: I will happily perform any menial task as in the GMYS game.> You're too modest. Your role in that game continues to be quite important. What do you mean by statistical analysis? Do you mean descriptive statistics (means measure of error)? |
Jul-02-07 | | amadeus: <In support of 1.d4, might I say these statistics are somewhat frightening:
Repertoire Explorer: Gert Jan Timmerman (black)> Creepy. If come to this, I think we should play the exchange variation (2 games only etc). |
Jul-02-07 | | ganstaman: <Marcelo Adaes: <SwitchingQuylthulg>, I think <kellmano> was just joking...> I think SwitchingQuylthulg was joking too. He concluded that 1.a4 is best... |
Jul-02-07
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <ganstaman> You mean it isn't, then? ;-) |
Jul-02-07 | | Ravelin: I voted 1.e4 here.
It's because I feel very comfortable playing Vienna Gambit and closed variations of the Sicilian Defense in my everyday challenges and I'm curious how it would work in a game against such strong player. I won't be using any engine, I'll simply vote for the moves I personally find best, just like in the two previous games. |
Jul-02-07 | | 2Towers: I look at other database:
ECO: C63 Ruy Lopez - Schliemmann
Number of games in database: 759
Years covered: 1853 to 2007
Overall record:
White wins 43.1%
Black wins 27.4%
Draws 29.5
For White:
Games played against Kasparov - 0
Games played against Fischer - 1 (Fischer vs Matulovic 1970 (blitz)) For Black:
Games played by Karpov: 1 (1966)
I'll continue later. |
Jul-02-07 | | THE pawn: I honestly have no idea of the opening choice, I don't really know him. |
Jul-02-07 | | Karpova: <THE Pawn>
Did you have a look at <Boomie>'s forum?
He's collecting information on GMGJT.
User: Boomie |
Jul-02-07 | | GHOST19: I'm an e4 player but don't want to play a boring spanish, so like imag, except if the team intends to play something else than the main lines of the Ruy Lopez I'm going for d4. I also hope that GMT in this kind of showmatch will try to spice things up in order to get an interesting game. |
