Jul-19-13  chessmoron: Ouch for the USA on the 1st Round.

WannaBe: Why don't they just rename this to Ex-Soviets vs. China Chess Summit?
Jul-19-13  parmetd: China sends one member of their A team and then their F team.... the USA does the same. Interesting.
Jul-19-13  lakers4sho: 'Murica getting dominated so far, ouch.
Jul-19-13  dumbgai: So it's 8 men (4 per team) and 10 women (5 per team)?
Jul-19-13  Strongest Force: Was Shankland born in a prison? What a great name for a jail/prison.
Jul-20-13  Caissanist: Each side has 5 men and 5 women, Chessgames is missing one player for each side. TWIC has the complete list: http://www.theweekinchess.com/chess... .
Jul-20-13  Caissanist: The women's side here is a ridiculou mismatch, the USA's first round performance (2 draws to go with their 3 losses) is probably the best they will do.
Jul-20-13  Refused: <Caissanist: The women's side here is a ridiculou mismatch, the USA's first round performance (2 draws to go with their 3 losses) is probably the best they will do.>

Their male counterparts did not do much better though. 3 draws two losses. And to be honest, I think the Chinese ladies and gentlemen will both run up the scoreboard a bit more.

Land Of The Shanks

LOL

Jul-20-13  lakers4sho: further destruction caused by the Chinese team.
Jul-20-13  Fish55: The US men were even with China in Round 2. Not bad, considering the rating difference and location.
Jul-20-13  Shams: <Fish55> I don't see a home-field advantage in chess.
Jul-20-13  chessguru1: Shulman is rusty. The USA needs more firepower.

HeMateMe: If this were the Beer Summit, we'd win easily.
Jul-20-13  parmetd: Shams the impact of traveling and timezone...
Jul-20-13  Shams: <parmetd> Leave three days early then?
Jul-20-13  notyetagm: <parmetd: Shams the impact of traveling and timezone...>

Insomnia, diet, etc. All of your usual habits go out the window.

Jul-20-13  chessmoron: <<HeMateMe>: If this were the Beer Summit, we'd win easily.>

You have no idea how strong the consumption of beer in China is.

WannaBe: Oh, boo-hoo-hoo, so maybe we should get a team that knows how to travel, and eat foreign food.

What, Olympians don't go through this? Soccer players don't go through this?

Okay, it looks like chess players are wussies.

WannaBe: Judging from the result of this tournament, also in China, the players did not have/suffer the same problems.

FIDE Grand Prix Beijing (2013)

Jul-20-13  Everett: <Okay, it looks like chess players are wussies.>

If chess is the only sport these guys compete in, then of course they are.

Almost every competitive chess player in their forties and above is soft and fat. It is hard to be tough when you practice sitting for so long, with the only moving going on is the pieces shuffling around the board in your head.

Well, I lived in a fraternity house for two years...I achieved several GM norms in suds consumption.

Jul-21-13  usuario x: <Shams the impact of traveling and timezone...>

the chinese team is way better. no excuses

Jul-21-13  Fish55: <WannaBe> Home teams have a big advantage in soccer World Cup qualifying. In the Olympics the host country usually does much better than in preceding Olympiads. The Beijing Grand Prix proves nothing one way or the other since there were only 2 players from China, neither of whom were expected to contend for first.
