Sally Simpson: Hans Niemann's private match v the 2024 USA Olympiad Team ended in a 2½-2½ draw. A win v Perez, draws v Caruana, Wes So and Aronian, a loss to Robson.
Oct-23-24  goodevans: ... and in the penultimate round, Samuel Sevian once again involved in the pick of the games. This time as the victor: Shankland vs Sevian, 2024
Oct-23-24  Petrosianic: Liang just played Anderssen's Opening!!
Oct-23-24  EvanTheTerrible: A thrilling final round, not only in suspense of the final standings, but the games are exciting too!
Oct-23-24  Twilight of the Idol: After 40 moves, Shankland had a solid if difficult position. However, he slipped up, winding up with a bad bishop and weak king. So...

Fabiano Caruana has won the 2024 US Championship with a final score of 7/10 or +4, -0, =6. Not half bad. His closest pursuers ended up on 5.5/10.

Sally Simpson: Looking for times of a game played in this event I fell upon the round one report on chess.com.

<Draws on all boards in round one of the 2024 U.S. Championship have already dashed the chances of a player repeating GM Bobby Fischer's perfect score in the 1964 championship.>

Obviously written by Coco the chess.com clown. That feat is never going to get equaled except maybe one day by Hans and I reckon when he is on P10. W.10 he will take a draw in his last round game just so Bobby's record stays intact. (watch this space.)

There was a 12th place prize of $6,000 but there was no 12th place because Chris Yoo was expelled. I wonder if the organisers thought of giving that $6,000 to the lady who got walloped as a form of compensation.

Oct-24-24  EvanTheTerrible: Congratulations Caruana on a third consecutive title.
Oct-24-24  stone free or die: A deserving nice pair.

Oct-24-24  fabelhaft: <The claim itself is very strange, and you also said that you don't recall reading anything about it before. So I doubt there is anything substantial there>

I think Belenkaya tells the truth, there are some similarities between Kramnik and Nepo even if the latter usually is more careful not too say anything too public. But he has been posting quite a few veiled cheating accusations against players lately. I hadn’t seen any OTB references before, but now I see that Nakamura talked a bit about the subject himself.

Nakamura states that Nepo complained to Arbiters and FIDE officials during the Candidates about Gukesh playing ”too well” and that he had to be cheating. Naka’s trainer also talked with Nepo after the event, and said that Nepo showed him a game he had played against Gukesh and argued that the latter had to have been cheating:

Oct-24-24  Atking: Congratulation to Caruana, it could be even a 2 points lead. Very impressive!
Oct-24-24  Atking: <stone free or die: A deserving nice pair. https://cdn.uploads.webconnex.com/1... Sure a magnificent picture.
Oct-24-24  notyetagm: Top 5 finishers made the next World Cup.

Who are they?

Atterdag: Yes, huge congratulations to sympathetic Caruana - indeed an impressive and well deserved victory.

Atterdag: <fabelhaft> and others regarding Nepo. Is it possible that Nepo has eaten sour grapes and can't stand the fact that he 1) clearly lost the match vs Carlsen, 2) lost the close match vs. Ding Liren 3) couldn't win the latest Candidates?

Is he desperately trying to justify why he consecutively failed bring the WC trophy into the halls of Kremlin? Anyway, he only discredits himself by these unsubstantiated accusations.

The tournament regulations state: <9.2. For any indivisible prizes, the following tiebreaks will be used: Most Wins, Most Blacks, Direct Encounter, SB (Sonneborn-Berger), and TPR.>

Assuming this is intended to determine placings (though not for the purpose of apportioning prize money), then I reckon:

2. Robson
3. Liang
4. Dominguez Perez
5. Sevian
6. Aronian
7. Niemann

perfidious: Assuming he makes it via the criteria listed, Dominguez trod a thorny path on the way; after five games played, he was minus two and looked to have no chance whatever before booking wins with Black from one inferior position and another which was losing at the finish.
Oct-24-24  notyetagm: << 2. Robson
3. Liang

Damn, sucks for Aronian and Niemann.

Miracle save against Shankland got Dominguez a World Cup spot.

Dominguez Perez vs Shankland, 2024

Oct-24-24  Olavi: <Atterdag: Is he desperately trying to justify why he consecutively failed bring the WC trophy into the halls of Kremlin?>

Without commenting on the other aspects, I'd like to remind you that a Kremlin / RUS chess federation spokesman has referred to Nepo in language that certainly would violate posting policies of more or less any internet site, if quoted.

Such were the consequences of failure in Soviet days, and it seems little has changed.

Atterdag: <Olavi> I am fully aware of the fact that Nepo and most of the Russian top players have been in an extremely delicate and difficult position since the invasion of Ukraine. As <perfidious> says we sadly recognize the intimidation executed by the old power center in Kremlin. That said, it cannot justify Nepo's subversive accutions towards Gukesh and Nakamura's team.
Oct-24-24  Olavi: <Atterdag> We can hardly expect or require Nepo to stop playing.

I can't see the connection of the Ukraine war to the accusations towards Gukesh/Naka.

Oct-24-24  Bobby Fiske: <Damn, sucks for Aronian and Niemann.> The World Cup can be a ticket into the Candidates. Now Niemann has to postpone his World Championship ambitions another cycle.
Oct-24-24  greed and death: Aronian and Niemann will almost certainly qualify to the World Cup via rating even if they don't via a tournament placing. In 2023 Wang Hao was the final rating qualifier with an Elo of 2709, which both Aronian and Niemann are currently above.
