Nov-23-08  ILikeFruits: fight the power....
join the PETA....
Nov-23-08  dramas79: Check out Hou-Chiburdanidze. If I may say so, this should be a favorite of <Open Defense>. The campaign against the isolated d pawn and its win reminds one of Karpov's board siight and mastery.

Open Defence: thanks for pointing out that game! :)
Nov-23-08  m00natic: It seems Maia is teaching "youngsters" how to play chess :) Kosteniuk, Muzychuk and now Hou, superb tournament by her and good chanses to win gold.
Nov-23-08  m00natic: ups, actually Poland are in best position for gold, aside lone leaders, they've played with the other top-guns (and lost only to China!)
Nov-23-08  percyblakeney: Poland will lead before the last round but I suppose they will get Ukraine in the last round (making it eight top ten opponents in a row), and they will probably need to win the match since Georgia with one match point behind have a better tiebreak and will get an easier opponent.
Nov-23-08  virginmind: bravo to romanian team for winning another round today and good luck tomorrow against whom it may be, so we can get good final ranking!
Nov-23-08  Karpova: De Rosa won her game so Italy beats Austria 2.5-1.5
Nov-23-08  chessmoron: WOW! China choked BIG time.
Nov-23-08  Pulse: <chessmoron> I think China's problem this time was that they lacked stamina. Their tremendous early start kind of petered out at the end. Case in point: Tan Zhongyi, who won five games in a row, but lost two games in succession, and Zhao Xue didn't exactly produce good chess this time around either. However this is still a very young team. The average age is about 18, with Zhao Xue as the oldest at 23. The fourth board and reserve player are both 17. I think they will impress in future Olympiads as they mature. :) For now, though, I think you can focus your attention on the men, who somewhat have a chance at gold.
Nov-23-08  Ladolcevita: China Women Team....
HouYifan,you are fine
ZhaoXue,you can retire now,too bad performance
Shenyang, are you still that world junior champion that can beat a male grandmaster at times?Draw, draw, draw, keep putting on your lipstick in the mirror every day,and marry any random guy. Fourth Board, too young and too premature, not strong enough any way.Maybe you two would never understand how hard the old players in last century worked on chess!

Feel really bad that they dont have enterrise and courage any more.

Nov-24-08  virginmind: wow, tomorrow we play with china! <Ladolcevita> i provoke you! what do you prefer, kung fu or a chess game?
Nov-24-08  Ladolcevita: Wow,,
yep,this is a tough question....
i guess i like the Kung fu of chess..
Nov-24-08  waustad: <FrogC>I believe Jovanka Houska was born in England. She made the point in her blog that the only thing Czech about her is her name.

Stonehenge: Korbut blunders against The Netherlands: http://schachlive.dresden2008.de/ga...
Nov-25-08  percyblakeney: Socko blundered in a promising position with 25. Nb5 instead of Nd4 against Lahno and no gold for Poland.
Nov-25-08  percyblakeney: Socko somehow saved the draw but Zawadzka avoided a repetition draw and lost against Ushenina, so the gold still seems to go to Ukraine.
Nov-25-08  virginmind: great result for the romanian team equal with china today! a special mention to iozefina paulet who beats today a 2450+ player (and 2 days ago another one of 2470+), although she is 2307 elo.
Nov-25-08  virginmind: also bravo to cosma elena luminita who drew hou yifan!
Nov-25-08  Karpova: Fuchs (2238) managed to hold the mighty Cmilyte (2512) to a draw.

Italy might upset Greece who are the Elo favorites on every board (except for the second one). They lead 2-1 while Zimina defends a pawn down endgame against Botsari.

Nov-25-08  percyblakeney: Mongolia finish one single match point behind China, and that with three 1900 players. 1. b4 again from A Enxtuul and she came close to beating her 2300 opponent.
Nov-25-08  Karpova: Italy-Greece 2.5-1.5 (+1 =3) after Zimina managed to hold the game.
Nov-25-08  percyblakeney: The Botswana players that have lost 0-4 in most of their matches over the last years mated their two opponents from Afghanistan that turned up in 11 and 13 moves.
Nov-25-08  percyblakeney: Nadezhda Kosintseva wins against Marlies Bensdorp in what looked like a drawn endgame by just picking up pawn after pawn, so Russia will avoid losing the match and may even win it.

SwitchingQuylthulg: So it's down to a nailbiter finish... the results of the last remaining games (Russia vs. Netherlands and India vs. Armenia) will decide whether UKR or GEO has the better tie-break!
