Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
European Championship (2009)

The 10th European Championship was an 11-round Swiss tournament held in the Congress Hall of the Splendid Spa & Resort Hotel in Budva, Montenegro, 6-18 March 2009, with a rest day on 13 March, and the day for playoffs on 18 March. It was organized by the Montenegro Chess Federation under the auspices of the City of Budva and the European Chess Union. A total of 305 players participated, including 139 GM's and 77 IM's. The first 22 (or as it turned out, 23) players would qualify for the World Cup (2009). Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves and 30 more minutes for the rest of the game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Prize fund: 120,000 euros. First prize 15,000, 2nd prize 12,000, 3rd prize 10,000 euros. Tournament director: Srdja Dragasevic. Chief arbiter: Panagiotis Nikolopoulos. Play began each day at 3 pm.

Evgeny Tomashevsky beat Malakhov in the final of the tiebreak KO matches among the players with 8 points. Jobava was 3rd. In the playoff for World Cup places between 14 of the players with 7.5/11 (i. e. those with lowest Buchholz score and not already qualified from the previous European championship), Savchenko, Sakaev, Vitiugov, Petrosian, Nisipeanu, Lupulescu and Motylev also qualified for the World Cup (2009). The KO matches for medals were of four (time-consuming) rounds, and was shortened down to two Rapid (15 min + 5 sec) games and, if 1-1, an Armageddon game (5 vs 4 min). Number of games played: 1653 Classical + 36 Rapid + 2 Blitz + 6 Armageddon = 1697.

Mar-18-09  virginmind: congratulations to the new european champion, tomashevski!
Mar-18-09  Andrijadj: congrats to evgeny!
Mar-18-09  DCP23: ok, get this:

Tomashevsky flags in a drawn game and loses on time. Armageddon is played. Tomashevsky tries to win, Malakhov digs his heels and stands. Tomashevsky overextends and starts losing, fast. Malakhov goes for the kill but blunders his rook away!!!

Tomashevsky - Malakhov 1-0

GM Evgeny Tomashevsky (2664, Russia) is the 2009 European Champion!

Mar-18-09  virginmind: well, to be honest, in armagheddon blunders are more or less inherent....
Mar-18-09  whiteshark: Congrats to the new European Champion, Evgeny Tomashevsky !!!
Mar-18-09  Akavall: Congratulations! What a win!
Mar-19-09  PhilFeeley: A great tournament. I guess tie-breaks and blunders are a part of the tournament way of life now...
Mar-19-09  KARPOVian: Will Inarkiev play in World Cup?By the way congratulations to Evgeny Tomashevsky, the new European champion!I'm also glad to see that the Russians (Tomashevsky,Malakhov,Inarkiev)dominated the entire field which also includes top European players.Only recently Alexander Grischuk won Linares;Svidler winning Aker Chess challenge 2008 and Gitelcom 2009;Kurnosov emerged victorious in Arctic Chess Challenge 2008 and Hastings 2009;Anish Giri's remarkable runner-up finish in Corus C. The giant-slaying ways of Kalmykian prodigy Sanan Sjugirov deserves some attention. Also equally impressive were Bocharov,Grachev,Savchenko,Vitiugov etc.Really a great moment for a great country.Go Russia!!!
Mar-19-09  KARPOVian: I forgot to say that Kurnosov almost win Aeroflot with amazing victories and Savchenko took clear first in Moscow Open 2009.Chessgames.com where are the games in Moscow Open 2009?When you will upload it?

Mar-19-09  myra: Congrats Baadur...to Georgians people and to all the Winners of EICC....as well to everyone !
Mar-19-09  percyblakeney: Tatiana Kosintseva and Lilit Mkrtchian were the winners in the last round and share first in the women's European Championship, tiebreak tomorrow.
Mar-19-09  DCP23: Great, more tiebreak fun!
Mar-19-09  Eyal: The regulations said that 22 players should qualify from this tournament to the World Cup, but as far as I can make out it's 23 overall - 9 of the 11 players who finished with 8 points (<Sokolov, Inarkiev, Naiditsch, Tomashevsky, Navara, Malakhov, Jobava, Kobalia, and Guseinov> - Nyback and Grachev have already qualified from last year's tournament); the 7 players of those who finished with 7.5 points who had the best tiebreaks (<Meier, Nijboer, Fedorchuk, Timofeev, Sjugirov, Bartel, and Mamedov>); and the 7 players with 7.5 points who won the qualification matches (<Savchenko, Sakaev, Vitiugov, Petrosian, Nisipeanu, Lupulescu, and Motylev> - Bologan and Papaioannou also qualifying from last year's tournament). Possibly the reason is that from last year's 23 qualifiers (http://www.eicc2008.com/en/qualifie...) Movsesian is going to qualify by rating, so his spot became free.
Mar-19-09  PhilFeeley: <Eyal: ...Bologan and Papaioannou also qualifying from last year's tournament.> Thanks for the summary. I'm surprised the others didn't already qualify from last year's tournament. They're all pretty strong, but I don't remember last year's results.
Mar-19-09  Eyal: <I'm surprised the others didn't already qualify from last year's tournament. They're all pretty strong>

Not all of them played last year, but at any rate it's quite difficult to qualify from such a tournament - very close field and huge competition. For example - players like Vallejo Pons, Akopian, Cheparinov, Volokitin, Caruana, and Nepomniachtchi didn't manage to qualify, and except for Cheparinov they all played last year as well. So I'd say it's quite an achievement by Nyback, Grachev, Bologan and Papaioannou to finish in qualification spots, so to speak, two years in a row.

Mar-20-09  DCP23: Mkrtchian - Kosintseva

first tiebreak game going now!

Mar-20-09  khursh: The 1st rapid game between Kosintseva(w) - Mkrtchian(b) ended in draw.
Mar-20-09  DCP23: Tatiana Kosintseva wins the tiebreak 1.5:0.5 and is now the

2009 European Women Champion!

Congratulations!

Mar-20-09  adair10: Congratulations to Kosintseva. What a finish!
Mar-20-09  DCP23: After an incredibly strong showing at Aeroflot where T.Kosintseva toppled very strong 2600+ and 2650+ male GMs right and left, I must say this title is most deserved!
Mar-20-09  khursh: Congratulations to T. Kosintseva !
Mar-20-09  whiteshark: Well done and congratulations, T. Kosintseva!
Mar-20-09  DCP23: Natalia Pogonina wins the tiebreak for the 3rd place 3:1 vs Maia Lomineishvili and thus gets the Bronze.
Mar-20-09  virginmind: congratulations to tatiana kosintseva.
