Nov-25-08  THE pawn: <Eyal> thanks for the quick response!
Nov-25-08  Eyal: <now, [Kamsky] suddenly gets

1) free pass to the next candidate event (for what reason?)

2) a theoretical chance to influence proceedings by potentially "unethical" distribution of "his" points in the ongoing fide grand prix. [i find it highly unlikely, but he can in theory choose to give less feared opponents in the right position help to outmanouver potentially stronger qualifiers.]>

Yeah, in principle it resembles the problem that was created in Mexico, when Kramnik had a potential influence on determining the identity of his opponent in the match.

Nov-25-08  DUS: <me to play> I completely share your opinion. Indeed the team USA is very strong and it won convincingly against Ukraine. This team could even take the gold medals. And it doesn't matter where some of the players were born, the important is that today they live and play in the USA.
Nov-25-08  frogbert: let me repost this from the carlsen page:

in my opinion, fide is going a long way in making the world championship into a private invitational.

by throwing everything around again, they effectively say that yet again, there is no system in place for future world championships. their current scheme based on grand prix and world chess cup has been scrapped, but not replaced by anything. we now have a sketch of how the challenger of

anand vs topalov/kamsky

will be decided, but no idea how the new challenger of

(anand vs topalov/kamsky) vs challenger

will be decided. it's just left to the improvisation and changing motives of kirsan & co. what a nightmare.

ketchuplover: I just saw Kirsan getting on a flight to Iceland and carrying a shovel.
Nov-25-08  badest: <frogbert: ... will be decided. it's just left to the improvisation and changing motives of kirsan & co. what a nightmare.> Funny, isn't it. Chess - a game ruled by mathematical precision is governed ... ad hoc. ;)

Fewer sports have less professional organizations than FIDE.

Nov-25-08  DUS: <Ezzy: ... A great tribute to Karen Asrian. They did it again just for him!...>

<Ezzy> Thanks for your nice posting!

Nov-25-08  badest: <notyetagm: <percyblakeney: ... Otherwise it's a free ride for Topalov and Kamsky while the Grand Prix has been very devaluated.>

Yes, more free rides for Topalov, Kamsky, and probably Kramnik.

I hope Anand *crushes* these freeloaders.> ... and if he doesn't - he'll get a free ride (there are some built in benefits for him too :)

Nov-25-08  badest: Reading through the Daily Dirt I found a good comment (or at least it makes sense to me)

<Raffael: "Money" is a keyword. Maybe the abrupt changes are neither because of some dark Russian conspiracy, nor from our lovely Mr. Sunshine himself, Silvio Danailov, but just because of financial problems? The global financial crisis is there, Bahrain tournament just has been canceled (due to money problems?!). The world cup system is very large and therefore expensive, it is much cheaper to organize only one tournament instead.

Topalov incidentally was also against a change of the system (as you can learn in his interview with Susan Polgar viewable also at chessvibes). I don't think any player is direct or indirect responsible for this new FIDE plan, it's all about money baby!>

Nov-25-08  Andrew Chapman: The last 26 games (3047-3072) were all decided!

Apparently this "Raffael" didn't understand Kirsan's offer at all. It's not about holding this cadidates tournament <instead> of the Grand Prix series or the World Cup - they're all still in place, only their importance as qualifying events is downgraded. It's actually about <adding> another tournament to the existing ones. How is that supposed to save money?

(Btw, for what it's worth, Geoffrey Borg told chessvibes that the cancelation of Doha Grand Prix was not a money issue.)

Nov-25-08  veigaman: Fide is just a coorporation, thats all.
Nov-25-08  visayanbraindoctor: I am for the existence of a Candidates event. Now, apparently so is FIDE (again). For me this is a fundamental change for the good, even if political compromises had to be made.

How do you sell the reinstatement of the Candidates to the chessworld in the middle of a cycle? By making it palatable to all parties immediately concerned.

The Candidates system often gives an advantage to the top Candidates in the previous cycle, as they get to be seeded in the subsequent cycle. The present 'Candidates' now are Topalov and Kamsky.

A lot of people will be complaining about this, but it probably means that FIDE has gotten the support of the US and Bulgarian Chess Federations.

The number of Grand Prix qualifiers has been increased from one to two. Will the present Grand Prix participants complain? Most won't, after they think about it a bit. Their chances for qualifying has just been increased.

The number of World Cup qualifiers has been increased from one to two. Will the 'weaker' countries that compose the General Assembly of FIDE complain? Probably not, as chances for any of their players in the World Cup to qualify has also been increased.

The highest rated player also gets to be seeded. Will the top ten of the FIDE rankings complain? Why should they? Even if they do not qualify via the Grand Prix and the World Cup, they are given another chance to qualify, but they will have to win a lot of games to do so in order to get to the top of the rankings. Probably fair enough for them.

The FIDE organizers, presumably led by Kirsan, get to seed one. Kirsan seems to be saying "Hey guys, I have cooked up a deal that benefits us all. What's my end of it?" So Kirsan also gets something.

I have to say that Kirsan knows how to play politics better than most people know how to play chess.

Nov-25-08  Davolni: < badest: <Is there a better trio of players in the world, all from the same country?> No. But that means nothing in a team competition.>

<Armenia's Aronian is not in top 10. But look at their boards 2 and 3! >

LOL

when was the last time you took a look at the ratings chart.....????????????????????

Nov-25-08  Mulyahnto: I'm very impressed by Leko and Gelfand this tournament. Gelfand is very underrated, although he can be inconsistent.
Nov-25-08  amadeus: Gelfand is a very good player, but he has a bad record against world champions: +25 -55 =117 (overall games)

Kasparov: +0 -13 =9

Kramnik: +5 -15 =44

Anand: +7 -14 =39

Btw, Leko's record against classical world champions: +18 -46 =155 (overall)

Kasparov: +1 -5 =16

Kramnik: +8 -17 =69

Anand: +6 -20 =45

Nov-25-08  PhilFeeley: <ketchuplover: I just saw Kirsan getting on a flight to Iceland and carrying a shovel.> This belongs on the Odd Lie page...
Nov-25-08  PhilFeeley: I would just like to offer my congratulations to all the medal winners. They did a magnificent job. I'm sure it was stressful and difficult with so many players around and spectators. I can't imagine anything like that in North America.

Having said that it's especially satisfying to see the U.S. take Bronze in both the Open and Women's tournaments. I'm sure they must be very happy and will strive for more.

Nov-25-08  PhilFeeley: One final note (if I may wax nationalistic here!): I'm pleased to see Canada's result this time, from 48th seed to 28th place, among such second-tier European powerhouses Greece, France and Norway (and only one point behind India and England). They did slightly better than last time (47th-->34th 7W 6L) with 6 wins and 2 drawn matches this time.

Considering what little support the team gets, they've done well.

Nov-25-08  Interbond: I have been reading about the Chess Olympiad history and I wonder when will we see an Olympiad in the USA? There has never been an Olympad in the USA!
Nov-26-08  adair10: Talking about Chess Olympiad history... Although people talk about dismal performance of Russians in last two Olympiads, a broader perspective is telling. They were dominating Olympiads since 1992 after demise of Soviet Union. Since that time Russians had 6 gold and 1 silver, Armenians -2 gold and 3 bronze, Ukraine - 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze and USA - 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.
Nov-26-08  hovik2003: I am happy with my favorate teams, which I mentioned before, three of them harvested all the medals and didn't budge any thing to other teams, only the other one Iran didn't do so well, finishing 40th instead of 17th as in Turine, and I thought this year team because of higher ratings is stronger team than one in Turine. Well in chess or any kind of other commpetetive sport result is never foreseeable for sure!
Nov-26-08  hovik2003: hum, as in olympiads record mentioned by <adair10>, Armenia being secend after giant Russia in medal counts (5 medals against 7), that is just impressive and fantastic feat for such a small country, and shows Armenia by winning the gold never is or has been a underdog team.
Nov-26-08  ARMENIA: ARMENIA won gold! I personally dedicate this medal to all X SOVIET countries...

Final Standings

1. Armenia
2. Israel
3. Ukraine
4. Russia

Nov-26-08  hovik2003: <Interbond: I have been reading about the Chess Olympiad history and I wonder when will we see an Olympiad in the USA? There has never been an Olympad in the USA!>

that is because USFC doesn't have the budget to handle such an event, actually no other organization will fund it to help them. And that is really sad for richest nation in the world who has a long history and two world champions in chess!
