Jan-21-15 | | belgradegambit: I think Sevian as the youngest participant must be pleased with 4 wins and a plus 1 score so far.
Navara game will be a challenge. |
Jan-22-15
 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: <belgradegambit>, Sevian's fighting spirit in overcoming an 0-2 deficit in such a short time must be sending chills down the spine of future opponents studying his games. |

Jan-23-15 | | asianwarrior: Kleon-Sharkland just ended. Must be the shortest game right now. |
Jan-23-15 | | dumbgai: Another win for Wei Yi, who now takes the sole lead with 9/11 and has a live rating of 2695.1. He has white against Haast tomorrow, another good opportunity to play for a win. |
Jan-23-15 | | ex0duz: <Ooh. I see separation, as Navara is pulling half a point ahead of Wei Yi. This is probably important, as there's probably some tiebreaker of more black games, which Wei Yi has. Regardless, usually the first place finisher is guaranteed to play in the Masters group, with the second place finisher (usually) invited anyway (Saric and Jobava).> Yep, you do see separation. But it's Wei Yi who's half a point ahead now, with his round 11 win over Bart Michiels! GoGo Wei Yi! Finish strong and clear first!
I feel bad for Navara, who's also had a great tournament and also hasn't lost a game. But Wei Yi is just nudging ahead at the finish line in a photo finish.. Oh well. Navara has all those lovely ratings points to console him. Does anyone know if it's the top 2 or just the winner who gets invited to Group A next year? Because both Jobava and Saric are in Group A this year..? Wojtaszek is also invited to Group A, even though he finished middle of the field last year with 7/13..? How does this work? What did Wojtaszek do to warrant being invited into Group A? I hope Yu Yangyi will get invited next year, after his winning performance at Qatar Open which put him at like 2730~ now.. Who do you guys think will be invited next year, along with the two(?) winners of Group B? Or yeah, when do they announce who's invited? At the end of this tournament when they find out the results, or do they keep the invites free until they see someone who's had an awesome 2015 so they can decide? I am guessing they can't leave it that late, because people do have to plan ahead with their schedules etc.. @dumbgai: Can Wei Yi still break 2700 in this tournament? There's still 2 more rounds right? He still has Haast(2352), and Salem(2603).. is Haast too low to give him what he needs? :( |
Jan-23-15 | | schweigzwang: <What did Wojtaszek do to warrant being invited into Group A?> He beat Carlsen and Caruana. :) |
Jan-23-15 | | JeffCaruso: What in the world happened in the Potkin-Timman game?? It looks like Timman hung a Rook in a completely drawn endgame. |
Jan-23-15 | | ManicSquirrel: <JeffCaruso: What in the world happened in the Potkin-Timman game??> I was just going to ask the same. Looks like a fingerslip or something from Timman in a completely drawn game. Maybe was blinded and thought that the bishop taking the rook would stalemate? |
Jan-23-15 | | FairyPromotion: <Wojtaszek is also invited to Group A, even though he finished middle of the field last year with 7/13..? How does this work? What did Wojtaszek do to warrant being invited into Group A?> Wojtaszek wasn't invited because of his success last year. This year there was a spot reserved for the highest rated player under 2750, and Wojtaszek was invited by ending the previous year at that position. |
Jan-23-15 | | fisayo123: <FairyPromotion> Forget Wojtaszek, he's been playing well for the last 3 years at least. The real question is what is Radjabov doing here? He hasn't shown anything relevant and important for the last 3 years. Would rather have had Andreikin in his place who could have been a real dark horse. Still, can't complain too much about the terrific field though. |
Jan-23-15 | | dumbgai: <Can Wei Yi still break 2700 in this tournament?> I think a win over Salem would give him around 4.1 points, and a win over Haast would add 1.2 points, putting him slightly over 2700. I think the most likely result is that he wins against Haast and makes a draw against Salem, which would give him first place. In that case Wei Yi would end up with a rating of about 2695. |

Rounds 4, 5, & 7 had one game as draw, all others were decisive. (thus far, with 2 rounds to go). |

He hasn't shown anything relevant and important for the last 3 years.> Huh?! The last time Radjabov was at Tata, he was tied second. Teimour is no longer playing at the level he played in 2012, but I don't see a reason for him not to get any invitations at all. Andreikin (who could have been a decent choice, and I don't want to belittle in any way) hasn't done much either, and unlike Radjabov he was never at the very top. Plus I don't see Radjabov as a weak link in this field. Or to put it in another way, I don't like the idea of having a selected group repeatedly playing against each other. |
Jan-23-15 | | fisayo123: Bad management by Wei Yi and his team (if he has one). Playing in such a long and competitive tournament only 3 days after 13 rounds here doesn't strike me as a sensible thing to do. http://www.gibraltarchesscongress.c... |

 | | WannaBe: I believe Gibraltar is a big Swiss, so Wei will probably be OK for the first two or three games, even possibly four before facing "competitions". |

Jan-23-15 | | Nf8: <FairyPromotion: <Wojtaszek is also invited to Group A, even though he finished middle of the field last year with 7/13..? How does this work? Wojtaszek got an ACP wildcard - as did Gunina for the B group, btw: http://www.chessprofessionals.org/c.... There's an "ACP Tour" which includes many events throughout the year, with some complex formula of calculating points for the players, and apparently the ACP has this kind of arrangement with a growing number of events (that's how Saric was invited to the recent Poikovsky tournament; there's also an ACP spot in the next World Cup). |

Jan-24-15 | | Severin: <I believe Gibraltar is a big Swiss, so Wei will probably be OK for the first two or three games, even possibly four before facing "competitions".> Plus this tournament has had a lot of rest days, and a lot of his games have ended pretty quickly. I don't think Gibraltar will be an issue for him. |
