Aug-05-10 | | GBKnight: I think he is looking to improve his Elo rating, which might in turn improve his chances of securing invitations to top events, plus he is rumourd to have secured private sponsorship |
Aug-05-10 | | dx9293: <GBKNight> Private sponsorship? Really? At this stage of his career? I like Adams, so good for him, but it is interesting that Howell or McShane don't get this sponsorship. |

 | | HeMateMe: He may have gone to this poor paying event to make a splash, get some good pub and win an event. I don't think he has won a tournament in some time. As someone mentioned above, in spite of weak payouts, one is still drawn to compete in their national championship, if only once in awhile. |
Aug-06-10 | | jahhaj: <I don't think he has won a tournament in some time> Adams won the Gibralter open in June. |
Aug-06-10 | | KingV93: Where is Nigel Short? How can you have a British Championship without Nigel Short!? Piffle. |
Aug-06-10 | | eightsquare: Congrats to Adams for winning this tournament! |
Aug-06-10 | | Ezzy: <Adams won the Gibralter open in June.> January. (just for the record) :-) Yes, great performance by Mickey! Gradually amassing more rating points. World number 17 on the live rating list (2731). I hope he starts to get more elite invites now he is moving back up the world leaderboard. This year he's been playing league matches and a few opens. 1st Gibralter (January), 2nd Chicago open (May) 1st British Championships (August). He tried to qualify for the World Cup in the European Championships in March, but only scored an average 7/11 (Lost 2 rating points) and didn't qualify. Congrats to Mickey on his 3rd British Championship win, and equalling Nigel Short's 3 British Championship wins. |

Aug-06-10 | | wordfunph: <Ezzy: Congrats to Mickey on his 3rd British Championship win, and equalling Nigel Short's 3 British Championship wins.> i hope Mickey overtakes Nigel.. |

Aug-06-10 | | goodevans: R Pert v A Hunt drawn in 7 moves.
Must be saving themselves for tomorrow ;) |
Aug-06-10 | | gmgomes: GM Wells has played an agressive 16. Nb3; Mickey has found the reply g4!, as expected by my engine. I think he will score full point today... |
Aug-06-10 | | goodevans: Did your engine anticipate <17 Nxc5> in reply? I certainly didn't. |
Aug-06-10 | | gmgomes: no, it was expecting something like 17. Ba6. Nxc5 it evaluates as -3, but after sometime it decreases to -1 due to 18. Rb1, as played. |
Aug-06-10 | | jamesmaskell: Finished second last in Under 120/1400. After 2 draws I was feeling pretty good but the last three rounds just went wrong. I threw away a win in round 4 knowing I had him under the cosh the whole game. Im pretty disappointed knowing the tournament could have easily turned out completely differently. |
Aug-06-10 | | goodevans: Wells seems to have emerged from the major complications quite well. Looks as though he'll go a pawn up but the position is complex with chances on both sides. Adams has a sac on e4 that looks tempting to a patzer like me. |
Aug-06-10 | | goodevans: Well what d'yah know ... he's just played it! |
Aug-06-10
 | | HeMateMe: I didn't see the chess author Gary Lane's name here this year. Guess he was taking one off. |
Aug-06-10 | | I Like Fish: all the same...
he came... |
Aug-06-10 | | dx9293: I hate to say it, but Mickey probably played because (a) he needs some cash, or more likely (b) he needs some rating points. |
Aug-06-10 | | zoren: A Swiss tournament as a top seed is hardly the place to gain rating points. Basically all professional chess players could need "some cash", but Mickey is likely to be playing for his own pleasure. |
Aug-06-10 | | dx9293: <zoren> I hope you are right and Mickey did indeed play for his pleasure! |
Aug-06-10
 | | Check It Out: Adam's games in this tourney impressed me; his seemingly simple openings suddenly go very bad for his opponents, all in around 30 moves, against 2500 opposition - amazing! |
Aug-07-10 | | wordfunph: <zoren: A Swiss tournament as a top seed is hardly the place to gain rating points. Basically all professional chess players could need "some cash", but Mickey is likely to be playing for his own pleasure.> i agree, not for rating points but for (in order of satisfaction).. + own pleasure
+ prestige
+ money |
Aug-07-10 | | pawn to QB4: <A Swiss tournament as a top seed is hardly the place to gain rating points.> agreed; managed it though, didn't he? |
Aug-07-10 | | eightsquare: how many rounds are there? |
Aug-07-10 | | BobCrisp: 11. It's over. |
