Nov-16-13 | | waustad: <USA team is not playing in the *European* Team Championship.>Though several countries that are usually considered to be in Western Asia are considered European for chess purposes. |
Nov-16-13 | | waustad: Sunday they begin play 4 hours earlier than usual. |
Nov-16-13
 | | Stonehenge: It looks like Grischuk blundered against Giri. |
Nov-16-13 | | Refused: Yeah, Grischuk looks to be a bit worse. But he is a very tenacious defender. Meanwhile it looks like France will at least not lose to Armenia. With MVL on board 2 they might even win it. |
Nov-16-13 | | Refused: And Bacrot has lost the thread and the game against Aronian. And suddenly Armenia is in the driver's seat. |
Nov-16-13 | | Refused: MVL equalized, with a draw on board 3 it's down to Sagrissian - Tkachiev Meanwhile, Grischuk held the draw against Giri, Smeets drew Andreikin.
And Morozevich seems to losing against van Kampen.
And the Russian hopes rest on Svidler to avoid another loss. |
Nov-16-13 | | fisayo123: Impressive win from MVL that. |
Nov-16-13 | | Refused: Grandelius is giving Topalov a hard time. |
Nov-16-13 | | waustad: If Shengelia can convert his better endgame, Austria would beat Spain, despite being outrated on all 4 boards. |
Nov-16-13 | | Refused: Meanwhile the Russian womens' team might get away with a lucky win vs. Georgia. On board 4 Javakhishvili seems to have dropped (a lot of) her advantage against Girya. Girya still has work to do to hold the draw, but a few moves ago it looked like she was just lost. |
Nov-16-13 | | fisayo123: What did L'Ami just do against Svidler? 43..Rc1+????????????? |
Nov-16-13 | | waustad: <Refused>Grandelius has been giving a lot of people hard times. At +2 with a 2671 performance rating going into today's game he's played quite well. |
Nov-16-13 | | fisayo123: L'Ami should apologize to his team after that move, because now, the Russians will escape with a draw. Hard to imagine a GM will play that in such a position! |
Nov-16-13 | | Refused: <fisayo123: What did L'Ami just do against Svidler? 43..Rc1+?????????????> Apparently he has not studied Tiviakov'S games carefully enough. Well a 2-2 is still a good result against the Russian Men's team. But ofc they could have beaten them today. I am still assuming van Kampen will win vs. Morozevich. |
Nov-16-13 | | Refused: OMG; Svidler won, and more surprisingly, van Kampen has let Morozevich of the hook. And thus the Russian team won a match they should have lost. |
Nov-16-13 | | nok: Dutch: fail. |
Nov-16-13 | | optimuswise: Jobava is on fire! |
Nov-16-13 | | Chess for life: Round 9 (final) pairings:
France (13) vs. Russia (11)
Azerbaijan (13) vs. Armenia (12)
2 pts for a match win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. |
Nov-16-13 | | fisayo123: Really bizarre turn of events in Netherlands-Russia. Suspicious even. |
Nov-16-13
 | | Natalia Pogonina: Congratulations to the Ukrainian women's chess team on winning the event with a round to go and thus "inheriting" our title. I guess we are facing each other tomorrow though. Should be exciting! |
Nov-16-13 | | lakers4sho: Van Kampen makes an easy mistake, time trouble I suppose. |
Nov-16-13 | | waustad: Best of luck Natalia. I couldn't root for you in this one: N Pogonina vs V Exler, 2013 but I've lived in Austria and I've never been to Russia. She may be the reigning champion, but this game may have been deer in the headlights. She's 0-4 vs the only Austrian close to your rating to the best of my knowledge. |
Nov-17-13 | | waustad: That should be "Austrian woman" not Austrian, since Marcus Ragger and Davi(d/t) Shengelia are both much higher rated. I hesitate to do a copy/paste correction since then links are usually broken. In any case congratulations to this year's champion Peter Schreiner on an excellent result so far. Perhaps with a win tomorrow he'll get GM norm, I don't know. The only Austrian posted GM norm now is Robert Kreisl, but there could be more where nobody paid the fee yet. Please post more if I am in error. |
Nov-17-13 | | virginmind: Chessbase still lists this as an 11 rounds event. |
Nov-17-13 | | kingfu: How do the Ukrainians do it? They win BOTH women's and men's team events. Alexander Ipatov missed winning the Junior Championship by a half point and is definitely a rising star. I want to be a Ukrainian when I grow up. |
