Reykjavik Open (2004)

The 21st Reykjavik Open was a 77-player 9-round Swiss tournament organized by the Icelandic Chess Federation. It was held in the City Hall of Reykjavik, Iceland, 7-16 March 2004. Rest day: 13 March (after Round 6). Time control: 100 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 50 more minutes for the next 20 moves, then 10 more minutes till the end of the game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Rounds 1-8 started at 5 pm, round 9 at 1 pm. Prize fund: 20,000 USD. First prize 6,000 USD, 2nd prize 3,500 USD, 3rd price 2,500 USD. Tournament director: Stefan Baldursson. Chief arbiter: Rikhardur Sveinsson. Number of games played: 342.

Aleksey Dreev won on tiebreak ahead of seven other players with 6.5/9. Epishin, Timman, Aronian and Nataf (Dreev and Sutovsky were already invited) qualified for participation in the ensuing Reykjavik Rapid (2004) (17-21 March).
