Aeroflot Open (2009) The 8th Aeroflot Open took place in the Izmailovo Hotel Gamma-Delta in Moscow, Russia, 17-25 February 2009. The A1 Open, for players rated 2550 and above, saw Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (who left after Round 6) as top-seed fighting for the EUR 21,000 first prize and a place in the Dortmund tournament, while the total prize fund for the four opens and blitz tournament on 26 February was EUR 180,000. Time control: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 60 more minutes for the next 20 moves, then 15 more minutes till the end of the game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 61. The tournament was organised by Aeroflot, the Russian Chess Federation and the Association of Chess Federations, in cooperation with the municipality of Moscow. Chief organizer: Alexander Bakh. Chief arbiter: Geurt Gijssen. Etienne Bacrot won on tiebreak ahead of Moiseenko, both with 6.5/9. Bacrot qualified for Dortmund Sparkassen (2009). The Aeroflot Blitz will serve as a qualifying tournament for the World Blitz Championship 2009 (Final) to be staged in Moscow from 15 to 17 Nov.2009.
