MissScarlett: <Early last month Lichess and chess.com both released statements regarding sexual misconduct allegations. It is our belief on the mod team that the St. Louis Chess Club and US Chess have showed a lack of accountability and proper action regarding this situation. Therefore, we will no longer be making official posts covering their events. Users can still make posts about their events.>

Check It Out: FYI, if you are on your cell phone you have to change your browser setting to "desktop site". The pgn viewer option is not available while on the mobile view setting.
Sep-10-23  Messiah: Terrible.

MissScarlett: TWIC has the PGNS for rounds 4-6 but without the starting FENs. chess.com and lichess.com aren't covering the event. The official site has no PGNs.

Disappointing!

Atterdag: My setting is always <pgn4web>. My cell phone shows it right, but not my PC.
Sep-11-23  Messiah: Bum won?

Atterdag: Congrats to Sam Sevian - a great achievement. Defeating such icons as Kasparov and Caruana is quite impressive.

HeMateMe: Is there some reason they can't play an entire 30 minute game? Too strenuous?

It seems like a (rapid 15) + 5 min to figure out the opening phase and +5 sec so nobody gets flagged.

One good thing for Garry... the variant gets everyone out of the opening book and spares him of a lot of deep opening prep, which he no longer does.

HeMateMe: I'll never forget the picture of Kasparov on the front page of the Sunday NY Times glaring angrily at a speaker, I think the FIDE press conference in which the '84 GK/Karpov title match was annulled because "The match length had exhausted the capabilities of both participants..." according to FIDE president Florencio Karpo-manes.

They saved Karpov's ass for a moment but no one could stop Gary Kasparov.

Atterdag: The Campomanes Presidency was a pitch dark period in the already not too glorious history of FIDE. But let's not forget the nations and their representatives who enabled the madman. As long as they got their thick envolope slid under the door to their luxurious hotel rooms, they had no problems giving him their votes.

Folke Rogard, Max Euwe and Fridrik Olafsson were honest, uncorrupted men, but that's it. The presidency of Olafsson ended 41 years ago!

perfidious: The corruption was inevitable under the one country, one vote mandate combined with such sterling specimens as Campomanes and Ilyumzhinov, ever on the make.

HeMateMe: Bessel Kok would have been fine. But, as you say, the poor nations could be bought.

Atterdag: Very true, <perfidious> :-) The <one country, one vote> has become a negative factor in all international sports committees (IOC, FIFA etc.). Countries with, say 8,000 actives get the same vote as countries with 80,000.

LOL I started to notice that perfy's comments are gone, and now it seems that the staff of CG silently muted that old rag for me.

Sep-15-23  Messiah: As English is not my native language, I decided to seek for some advice:

<<me>: Recently I referenced an old, disrespectful and annoying guy as an 'old rag'. Is that a degrading term?>

<<ChatGPT>: Referring to someone as an "old rag" can be considered disrespectful and derogatory. It's an insulting term that likens the person to something old and worthless, which can be hurtful and offensive. It's generally a good idea to use polite and respectful language when talking about or addressing others, even if you have disagreements or conflicts with them. Using derogatory terms can escalate tensions and make communication more difficult. It's better to express your thoughts and feelings in a more constructive and respectful manner.>

So yeah, it seems my choice of words was totally correct.

If someone referred to you as an <old lutefisk> you'd probably get the message and take offense.

HeMateMe: Why the horrible graphics on this page, these game boards? It looks like Internet 1995.
Sep-19-23  HaydenB: Kasparov continues to embarrass himself. I thought he learned this lesson after losing in 7 moves to Mamedyarov
Oct-19-23  Helios727: Kasparov had such a strong start that I thought he was going to wallop the younglings and show everyone that The Boss is back. But then ... what the heck happened?

fredthebear: It's a dramatic drop-off. Perhaps too much vodka after the three games (2.5) on the first day.
Oct-25-23  Helios727: In any event, congratulations to Sam Sevian for his win and great performance.
