  GrahamClayton: 'Tournament of the Strongest Masters of the USSR'. Botvinnik was unavailable, while Levenfish and Ragozin withdrew shortly before the tournament commenced - they were replaced by Estonian players Renter & Randviir.

  perfidious: Botvinnik was thus the only player missing who had also played in the celebrated USSR Absolute Championship.
