The 18th European Women's Championship was a 144-player 11-round Swiss tournament held in Radisson Blu Hotel Latvija in Riga, Latvia, 11-22 April 2017. Rest day: 18 April (after Round 7). It was organized by the Latvian Chess Federation, under the auspices of the European Chess Union. The first 14 players would qualify for the next Women's World Championship tournament. Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 more minutes for the whole game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Prize fund: 70,000 euros. First prize 12,000, 2nd prize 10,000, 3rd prize 8,000 euros. Tournament director: Egons Lavendelis. Chief arbiter: Ashot Vardapetyan. Play began each day at 3 pm (Round 11 at 11 am). Number of games played: 787. Nana Dzagnidze won with 8.5/11, ahead of Goryachkina (2nd) and Galiiamova (3rd), who both had 8/11. Excluding those that were already qualified, and also excluding those who (in due time) might become qualified by rating, the first 14 players qualified for the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2018). She seems to have been treated rather poorly by the Ukrainian federation. Was promised an apartment for winning the world championship a few years back, but it's still caught up in red tape. Still lives with her mum, and two cats. |

Players were more careful than usual in this tournament. Lots of draws to secure the first 14 spots. M. Muzychuk didn't even try to fight for podium. |
